    Description

    The Director of Communications for Tulsa Regional Tourism (TRT) is responsible for leading efforts and executing a communications vision and strategy to contribute to a compelling and consistent brand narrative for TRT and its four divisions. This role provides high-level press AND media services with/for TRT partners, develops long-form content including articles and blogs, curates and manages local journalist interactions including media interview requests and regional/national journalist interactions with/for Tulsa on the premise of selling it as a destination in alignment with TRT division initiatives. Reporting to the Vice President of Destination Strategy AND Marketing, the Director of Communications addresses the organization’s evolving public relations (PR) and media needs.

    PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Maintain press-ready level of professional behavior with a positive attitude when interacting with internal and external partners.
    • Provide PR and media resources for the entire Tulsa Regional Tourism organization, including Visit Tulsa, Tulsa Convention and Visitors Bureau, Tulsa Sports Commission, and the Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts, and Culture (FMAC).
    • Provide press support at various meetings and events.
    • Manage planning and execution of press conferences.
    • Plan and execute the structure, talking points, and set-up for interviews.
    • Manage development and deployment of press releases.
    • Create long-form non-website content and disseminate as appropriate (e.g., articles and TRT newsletters).
    • Develop and create website content in the CMS (content management system) for various types of communications and/or material distribution (e.g., PR/Media portals, blogs, and articles).
    • Contribute to the structure, content, and effectiveness of the Visit Tulsa website.
    • Curate and plan strategic journalist visits including itinerary building and assist with the execution of accommodations alongside the Events & Experience team.
    • Develop monthly, quarterly, and annual media reports which include KPIs outlined in city contracts or from board/Chamber requests.
    • Regular attendance and participation with organizations such as PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and Tulsa Press Club.
    • Assist with developing departmental budget related to PR/Media-related line items.
    • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

    Qualifications


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in PR, journalism, marketing, or related field is required.
    • At least five (5) years of experience related to PR, journalism, or marketing is required.
    • Ability to learn and provide daily support for multiple brands under the TRT umbrella.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with extensive knowledge/skill specific to grammar.
    • Ability to craft content for a variety of audiences (e.g., meeting planners, hoteliers, business owners, musicians, leisure travelers, etc.)
    • Ability to work with a team and build relationships with people from various backgrounds and at varying levels of seniority.
    • Ability to solve problems and create and/or improve processes, as well as implement and maintain the processes.
    • Innovative, flexible, and willing to make changes and be nimble in a constantly-evolving industry.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
    • Knowledge of Tulsa, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite, as well as PM, CRM, and CMS software management is a plus but not required.
    • Previous Tourism experience is a plus but not required.
    • Photography skills are a plus but not required.

    WORK AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Work environment: Normally a typical office environment with people, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, with occasional outdoor exposure to heat, cold, and environmental elements.
    • Physical demands: Manipulate, handle, feel, and control items or equipment.
    • Ability to read, write, and interpret written documents.
    • Required to occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
