  • About Employee Navigator

Have you used a web site to sign up for your annual employee benefits? That's what we build. There's a good chance you've used our software because our two platforms – Ease and Employee Navigator – are used by over 100,000 companies nationwide.

We are a SaaS business concentrating on letting employees enroll in benefits online. Our service provides web applications for employees to enroll in benefits and administrative portals for HR, insurance brokers, and insurance companies to configure benefits. We build APIs to handle B2B transactions with our insurance carrier and payroll partners - hundreds of thousands of transmissions per day between us the largest carriers and payroll companies.

You'll be working on the most innovative employee benefits solution out there. We are leading the way for enabling enrollment at a national scale for any size employer and providing a platform that allows employees to be offered affordable Fortune 500 style benefits.

    About the Role

As Director of QA, you will lead a team of analysts and engineers who make sure employees can quickly and accurately select benefits and get those benefits to insurance carriers and payroll providers in a timely manner. The analysts are highly knowledgeable about insurance and ensure product definitions and code meet the true needs of the customers. The engineers team up with analysts to scale out that knowledge. You will help guide the QA teams on joining skills to build test systems efficient enough to handle the ever-growing volume of users and the complexities of our increasingly data-driven insurance ecosystem.

Our software development teams are highly collaborative. You will help with evolving that collaboration by helping find friction points and working with peers in other departments to get rid of them. You will help set strategy, but then let the team be creative and find solutions with your guidance. You will help the department with coaching on innovation and better ways to share that knowledge within the team and across other departments.

Due to the people-leadership nature of this role, you will need to come into our Frederick, MD office at least 4 days per week. You'll also need to come to the main office in Bethesda periodically. Travel to other offices is possible since some of the team is distributed – remote and in other company offices.

    Here's what you'll do day-to-day:

    • In the first 90 days, you will go through our insurance training program, shadow with our customers support representatives, and study our QA, Engineering, and Product Management handbooks to learn the hows-and-whys of our Product Development process. Then you'll help with manual and automation testing to learn how the team works.
    • Mentor the team leads via 1-on-1's. Keep track of items cutting across teams so they stay in sync. Roll up lessons and issues to VP / CTO so strategy can be updated to account for new information.
    • Assist VP / CTO with annual strategy and semi-annual updates. Monitor strategy progress monthly and keep the management team updated on progress and changes.
    • Expand the team by recruiting and onboarding high performing QA Analysts and Automation Engineers.
    • Grow leaders from within the team.
    • Increase the efficiency of testing efforts while improving quality by advancing the automated testing capabilities, and introducing other testing frameworks and techniques, particularly by providing training opportunities for QA analysts with strong domain expertise to adopt additional technical skills.
    • Help the team expand test-case documentation within test case management tools to support more efficient testing and training.
    • Advance the use of metrics and dashboards to quantify the quality, speed, and risk reduction efforts of the organization.
    • Work cross-functionally with Engineering and Product Management to continually improve the end-to-end development processes and foster a culture of quality across the organization.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • 5 years' experience in technical management role, responsible for growing a QA team in a SaaS or cloud-based software company.
    • 10 years in software testing, with a track record of increasing responsibility.
    • Significant experience managing, growing, and successfully integrating a test automation program into the core development process.
    • Experience driving the expanded use of test case management tools to support a well-organized QA process.
    • Highly organized, reliable, with consistent follow-through, and is someone who provides regular communication within the team and across departments to provide clarity on expectations, and visibility on status.
    • Has advanced the careers of direct reports through highly effective coaching and mentorship.
    • Demonstrates excellent judgement in decision making and seeks the right level of input.
    • Recognizes the importance of working in the office to gain valuable domain knowledge and train and mentor a growing team.
    • Understand how to keep remote employees engaged with office teams.

    Bonus Points:

    • Prior experience in Benefits Administration, Health Insurance, Payroll, or Human Resources Software.
    • Has successfully trained non-technical staff to become automation engineers.
    • Selenium experience.
    • Experience testing external-facing APIs.
