Emergency Medical Technician responds to emergency calls for medical assistance, assesses the situation, obtains a basic medical history and physical examination of the patient, and provides emergency care at the scene and during transit to the hospital. Utilizes necessary medical equipment to treat the patient and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness. Being an Emergency Medical Technician communicates with the medical care facility receiving the patient about the patient's condition, status, and arrival time. May require registry in NREMT. Additionally, Emergency Medical Technician requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Emergency Medical Technician works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Position Description
    The EMT at Honor Community Health (HCH) is essential to our high-performing healthcare team. This non-exempt position reports to the Lead Medical Assistant, Practice Manager, or Director of Health Center Operations depending on the position location. The EMT provides direct and indirect patient care while assisting clinicians in delivering evidence-based, patient-centered medical care. The EMT is also responsible for completing general office duties and patient records and monitoring various clinical processes.

    Essential Functions:

    Clinical Office Tasks
    1. Keeps the appropriate supplies stocked in exam rooms and lobby areas. Maintains patient confidentiality and strictly follows privacy regulations.
    2. Places patients in examination rooms according to the established workflow protocol of the healthcare facility.
    3. Cleans the exam room immediately after a patient visit, following the proper protocol.
    4. Ensure that the exam room is set up properly for the next visit by following the correct procedure.
    5. Follows the workflow of the medical office and assists in making patient visits efficient and timely.
    6. Observes, records, and reports to the physician the patient’s condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment. Performs first-aid and emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures such as stomach suction, airway management, and heart monitoring during ambulance ride.
    7. Operates equipment such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), external defibrillators, or bag valve mask resuscitators in advanced life support environments. Administers drugs either orally or by injection or performs intravenous procedures under a physician’s direction.
    8. Coordinates work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department staff.
    9. Performs other duties as assignedDuring a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties similar to but not limited to those in the job description. During clinic operation shortages and without advance notice, the employee may be relocated to a different HCH location.

    Patient-Centered Care
    1. Adheres to the guidelines, procedures, and protocols established by the Medical Director and the Director Health Center Operations
    2. Helps with taking care of patients and making sure the patient encounters are properly documented in the electronic health record.
    1. Responsibilities may include taking patient vital signs, spirometry readings, conducting EKG tests, breathing treatments, vision eye chart reading, urinalysis, hemoglobin, glucose, Strep A, flu test, covid test, pregnancy test, STI testing, administering injections and immunizations, drawing blood, collecting lab samples, monthly quality controls and other procedures.
    2. Renders basic first aid or CPR when necessary.
    1. Ensures that patients get the required prescriptions, refills, referrals, and follow-up appointments during their visits.
    2. As needed or appropriate, it may be necessary to communicate directly with patients regarding upcoming appointments, hospital admissions, referrals, and pharmacy refills.
    Clinic and Office Operations
    1. During every patient visit, record all necessary data elements in the EHR system including –
      1. Patient information,
      2. Medical histories,
      3. Immunization history/inputs historical vaccines,
      4. Treatment plans,
      5. Obtains and records vitals,
      6. Monitors reports to ensure that all data elements are captured in EHR during each patient visit.
    2. Maintains patient confidentiality and strictly follows privacy regulations.
    3. Places patients in examination rooms according to the established workflow protocol of the healthcare facility.
    4. Follows the appropriate protocol for sterilizing equipment.
    5. Adheres to HCH policies and procedures, along with local, state, and federal regulations, including but not limited to:
      1. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing.
      2. Third-party laboratory testing.
      3. Vaccine management, ordering, storage, and handling, including –
        1. The Vaccines for Children (VFC) program requirements in accordance with the Alliance for Immunization in Michigan (AIM) Toolkit including but not limited to-
          1. Refrigerator and freezer temperature tracking.
          2. Download data loggers weekly.
      4. Medication storage, access, and administration.
      5. Universal Biohazard Precautions.
      6. Emergency Preparedness.
    6. Assists patients by answering their queries or guiding them to the appropriate resources, whether it be in-person or over the phone.
    7. Aids in collecting data for audits, both for internal and external purposes.
    8. Excels in a fast-paced clinic environment, adapting to the ever-changing patient needs and workflow requirements of Honor Community Health.

    What are we looking for?

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Experience working in a healthcare environment
    • Experience cleaning office space
    • Must have excellent communication skills
    • Knowledge of general principles of medicine as can be derived from an EMT or paramedic training program.
    • Postsecondary certificate (EMTs); Associate’s degree (Paramedics).
    • Certification and state license required.
    • BLS Certified through American Heart Association.
    • 6 months in a similar clinical position is required.
