Wythe County is hiring dispatchers, and we’re willing to train the right candidates for our E911 emergency communications center located in downtown Wytheville. The dispatch center operates 24/7, directing communications for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services.
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED; have some computer skills and knowledge; be able to read and understand a map; be able to hear and speak clearly. Public safety experience helpful but not necessary.
: Receive phone calls and texts for service from the public for police, fire and rescue. Sends police, fire and rescue personnel to emergency scenes by radio communication and electronic paging. Entry and inquiry into VCIN/NCIC/DMV records via data terminal. Operate modern computer-aided dispatch and mapping. Carry out assigned related tasks as required.
: Must be able to type, communicate professionally and clearly via telephone and radio, and quickly and calmly handle multiple tasks simultaneously under stressful emergency situations. May be required to pass a hearing test. Requires ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be willing to work shifts assigned; we have openings on both day shift (6 a.m.-6 p.m.) and night shift (6 p.m.-6 a.m.). Requires high school diploma or equivalent, pre-employment physical, clean drug screen and background check.
