    SALARY: $17.00/HR (SEIU Master Unit)

    HOURS: Regular Full Time

    40 hours per week

    OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE JOB;

    To perform work involved with emergency services dispatching from a centralized public safety answering point/communications center.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB;

    • Receives training in emergency service response, first aid and communications equipment operations.
    • Performs in accordance with Greene County EMA/9-1-1 policy, orders and statements of procedures and protocol.
    • Receives telephone calls from the public concerning emergency and non-emergency situations related to law enforcement, medical, fire, disasters and other related incidents.
    • Records pertinent information and transmits same to agencies and individuals.

    Maintains records and reports of activities. Makes referrals to other public service agencies when appropriate.

    • May provide pre-arrival instructions to caller, utilizing established protocol and procedure.
    • Monitors and operates telephones, radios, alarm panels, video monitors, tape recorders, computers and all other equipment located within or controlled by the EMA 9-1-1 facility.
    • Uses a wide variety of radio frequencies to inform and coordinate activities of participating emergency service agencies.
    • Maintains a safe working environment and takes care to protect all equipment and materials associated with the EMA/9-1-1 facility.
    • Assists EMA/9-1-1 during times of natural or man-made disasters that occur in or could effect the population of Greene County.
    • Provides for general cleanliness and order within the EMA/0-1-1 facility.

    OTHER DUTIES OF THE JOB:

    • Assists in training of new employees.
    • Suggests improved communications practices.
    • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by the EMA/9-1-1 facility employees operating in a supervisory capacity.
    • May be asked to give talks or lectures to community groups at the EMA/9-1-1 facility or in the field.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

    Works under the general supervision of a telecommunications supervisor, a senior telecommunicator or the EMA/9-1-1 Director/Coordinator.

    SUPERVISION GIVEN:

    Performs supervision as required or directed.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Works indoors in adequate workspace, temperatures, ventilation and lighting.
    • Requires long periods of sitting, adjusting to changing shifts and days off.
    • Exposure to a stressful environment, including a window-less, no smoking situation, with little chance for breaks.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:

    • Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
    • Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday.
    • Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of fingers/hands for computer work to simple dexterity of feet/legs; torso necessary to carry out duties of the job.
    • Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work.
    • Must be able to work all three shifts; day, afternoon and midnight.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • EDUCATION/TRAINING

    High School diploma or equivalent; some computer training required.

    • WORK EXPERIENCE

    Minimum of two (2) years of clerical experience of progressively responsible nature in an office environment, or any equivalent combination of experience and/or training.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Must possess the ability to gain knowledge of the community, including major facilities highways, streets, landmarks, etc.
    • Must possess the ability to gain knowledge of various communications and emergency response procedures.
    • Must possess working knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar, typing skills and computer skills.
    • Must possess the ability to read maps.
    • Must possess skills in reading and understanding complex technical documents written in English, such as laws, ordinances, procedures, training manuals, computer printouts, and public safety reports.
    • Must possess skills in observing, remembering and recording facts, and details such as those contained in oral and written directives, radio communications, and telephone communications.
    • Must possess the ability to organize and analyze a variety of information and apply selected knowledge, which is learned after employment, in order to decide on an appropriate and reasonable course of action.
    • Must possess the ability to exercise tact, self-restraint, judgment, and strategy in dealing with a wide variety of people in various emotional states.
