    Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

    • Operates Stress Lab medical equipment as part of the Diagnostic Stress Testing of patients.
    • Supports physicians and/or other medical professionals in using diagnostic instruments, equipment and accessories.
    • Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures.
    • Provides initial and ongoing education to the patient and significant other regarding the procedure, follow-up process, and expectations for results.
    • Communicates with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand, based on age-specific guidelines.
    • Presents explanations and instructions in a manner, which can easily be understood by the patient, significant other, and other healthcare providers.
    • Positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
    • Performs triage, rearranges patient priorities, collaborates with lower-grade employees performing ancillary functions.
    • Independently performs diagnostic procedures.
    • Assists Physicians, RNs and/or other Medical Officer during procedures.
    • Provides comprehensive rationale, including patient anomalies that require deviation from standard or prescribed treatment.
    • Collects information such as weight, vital signs, etc. from the patient prior to the procedures and records information.
    • Serves as technical expert in the operation, calibration and maintenance of specialized medical equipment and instruments.

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
    • Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.
    GS-8 Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, can must meet:
    • Experience: At least one (1) year of experience comparable to the next lower grade (GS-07) level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled. Experience at the GS-07 includes but is not limited to: provides knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment; operates and monitors electrocardiographic equipment to perform specialized examinations and studies involving exercise stress testing, ambulatory monitoring of arrhythmias, and indirect carotid pulse tracings on chronic patients; monitors tracings to identify arrhythmias and when gross abnormalities appear, when to repeat certain procedures, when to stop test procedures, and when to get the immediate attention of a physician; evaluates test results to determine appropriate machine adjustments and uses alternative techniques and procedures when established procedures do not accomplish acceptable results (this includes adapting equipment and accessories to yield the best results during the examination); edits and selects an appropriate sample portion of the tracing for further interpretation by the physician.
    Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidates must demonstrate the following KSAs:
    • Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures.
    • Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians.
    • Knowledge of a variety of related acute disorders and diseases, their effects on organs, and methods of treatment.
    • Ability to perform more complex procedures such as SAECG (Signal Averaged ECG), Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring.
    May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

    Preferred Experience:
    • Routinely performing Electrocardiograms or has Telemetry monitoring experience.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing and sitting. The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is also required to push equipment to the inpatient units.

    Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
