  • Under direction, performs skilled electrical work, including maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction of District buildings systems and equipment; designs, inspects, and tests the electrical distribution systems and circuits; performs preventive maintenance; responds to work orders and electrical emergencies; installs and maintains light fixtures, provides recommendations on the design and installation of electrical systems for new construction and existing facilities; maintains inventory of electrical supplies, equipment, and tools, and performs other duties as assigned.


    Supervision

    Works under the direct supervision of a department manager.   

    Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees and temporary employees.  


    Work Schedule
    40 Hours/Week, 12 Months/Year
    Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification.

    • Performs skilled electrical work, including maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction of District buildings systems, and equipment in accordance with building, fireand safety codes and regulations, contacts vendors as needed.
    • Designs, inspects, and tests the electrical distribution systems and circuits, both underground and within buildings ,including switchesfuses, lines, electrical conduits, raceway systems, receptacles, and outlets. 
    • Performs preventive maintenance on electrical panels; checks and services circuit breakers, distribution panels, and transformers; monitors and tests generators.
    • Responds to work orders and electrical emergencies; inspects and troubleshoots systems to diagnose problems and performs repairs. Prioritizes jobs and determines project timelines.
    • Installs and maintains light fixtures, including wiring switches, sensors, sockets, ballasts and retrofitting fixtures for energy efficiency, the wireless clock system, GPS transmitter, repeaters, and electrical clocks; diagnoses problems with field lighting.
    • Provides recommendations on the design and installation of electrical systems for new construction and existing facilitiessketches layouts based on blueprints, plans, and specifications.
    • Maintains inventory of electrical supplies, equipment, and toolsestimates labormaterials, and equipment needed for assigned worksubmits requisitions for orders.
    • Prepares reports and maintains records of work performed and materials used. 
    • Cleansmaintains, secures and organizes work areas, tools, and equipmentperforms minor repairs on tools and equipment.
    • Operates vehicle (s) to transport tools, equipment, and materials.
    • May provide work direction to lower-level employees and/or temporary employees. 
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties.


    Education and Experience: 

    High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship or specialized electrical training program. 

    Four (4) years of skilled work in the electrical trade. 


    Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements:

    • Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.
    • Requires a California General Journeyman Electrician Certification or C-10 Contractor License.


    Knowledge of:

    • Basic electrical theory, including the principles and measurement of electrical currents, voltage, and resistance.
    • Electrical standards and building, safety, and fire codes as related to electrical wiring and installations including relevant state regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
    • Components of electrical distribution and lighting systems
    • Electrical circuit structure and load.
    • Operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in electrical work such as voltmeters, multimeters, drills, fish tape, circuit analyzers, conduit benders, wire strippers, pliers, and platform lifts.
    • Safe practices for handling electricity including personal protective equipment and lockout and tagout procedures to ensure circuits are de-energized before work is performed.
    • Protection and safety requirements applicable to working with power equipment and hazardous or toxic material.
    • Laws, regulations, standards, and requirements applicable to areas of assignment.  
    • Office practices and procedures, including the use of personal computers and standard business software.
    • Principles and practices of customer service. 
    • Standard formats for business letters and other communications.
    • Methods of prioritizing, planning, and organizing work.
    • Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
    • Basic arithmetic. 
    • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
    • Recordkeeping and filing techniques and practices.


    Ability to:

    • Perform skilled electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance.
    • Design and install electrical systems including reading and interpreting sketches of layouts based on blueprints, plans, and specifications.
    • Identify defects and problems in electrical systems and test equipment and materials.
    • Estimate costs, labor, and materials required for electrical repairs and maintenance
    • Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure safety and compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
    • Prepare and maintain thorough and accurate records.
    • Use and operate various vehicles, tools and equipment applicable to the electrical trade.
    • Monitor and maintain inventory. 
    • Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.
    • Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).
    • Prepare correspondence and other documents using standard business formats.
    • Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately within established deadlines.
    • Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others. 
    • Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.
    • Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties. 
    • Work and perform duties independently. 
    • Perform and prioritize multiple tasks. 
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    • Work typically occurs in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to varied weather conditions, chemicals and fumes/odors, surfaces, high elevations, tight spaces, vibrations, high voltages and occasional unsanitary conditions

    Salary 
    The Plumber classification salary range is currently range 41.


    Starting salary is from $6,256.83 to $6,898.09 per month depending upon education and experience.  Internal applicants may be initially placed at a higher starting salary as outlined in the CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
