    JOB SUMMARY:

    Performs skilled work required to install, maintain, repair, replace and modify electrical and electronic operating systems, features, and fixtures in and around Airport grounds. Work includes the care and maintenance of building power distribution systems; internal and external lighting systems and components thereof; electrical fixtures; electrical appliances; electrical and electronic systems and devices, including, but not limited to, building security and alarm systems; electronic monitoring and surveillance systems; electronic control and display panels; photoelectric and programmable logic controllers; communications and audiovisual systems; and electronic locking devices. Work assignments are performed in accordance with established maintenance schedules and as needed to maintain facility operations and security.  General supervision is received from supervisors and/or managers.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    Listed examples are illustrative and representative of the tasks required of this classification, but are not intended to be complete or exhaustive for this position.

    • Installs, inspects, maintains and repairs conduit, electrical wiring, circuit breaker panels, relays, receptacles, switches and other components of facility power distribution and lighting systems.
    • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit and pulls wiring through conduit.
    • Connects wiring to lighting fixtures, controls and power distribution apparatus, ensuring proper configuration and grounding of circuits. 
    • Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components.
    • Inspects electrical power distribution, lighting and electronic systems, fixtures, equipment, appliances, devices, controls and components thereof to identify damage, deterioration and malfunctions.
    • Repairs and/or replaces obsolete, damaged or deteriorated circuitry, switches, connectors, controllers and other components of electrical and electronic operating systems and devices.
    • Performs preventive maintenance for electrical power distribution, lighting and electronic systems; electrical appliances; access control devices and systems; and other electrical and electronic equipment and controllers in compliance with manufacturers’ established preventive maintenance schedules.
    • Monitors controls, meters, regulators and other indicators to ensure proper functioning of electrical and electronic security and other systems.
    • Troubleshoots electrical power distribution and lighting systems; electrical and electronic control systems and circuit boards; large and small appliances; electrical and electronic security systems and devices and other electrical and electronic systems and components.
    • Maintains exterior building, parking lot, grounds and roadway lighting equipment; performs periodic inspections of lighting equipment; replaces bulbs and regulators; and repairs electrical circuits.
    • Diagnoses malfunctions in electrical power distribution and lighting systems; electrical and electronic control systems and circuit boards; large and small appliances; electrical and electronic security systems and devices and other electrical and electronic components, and determines whether repair and/or replacement work can be performed in-house.
    • Tests, debugs and reprograms programmable logic controllers.
    • Maintains a working inventory of replacement parts, components, and supplies, and notifies the supervisor when additional inventory orders are required.
    • Inspects all electrical and electronic work performed in-house and by contractors to ensure compliance with federal, state and local codes, rules, regulations and other requirements.
    • Performs all work in accordance with established safety practices and procedures.
    • Maintains the work area in a neat, clean and orderly condition.
    • Performs other maintenance functions as required.

     

    REQURIED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or certificate program or possession of an Associate’s degree in electrical or maintenance technology; or completion of an Armed Forces electrical or maintenance technician training program; or an equivalent combination of training and experience in the trade.
    • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Class 3 Electrician's license.
    • Five years experience at the journey level in the trade, including supervision of lower skilled tradespersons.
    • Thorough working knowledge of the theory and applied principles of direct current circuits, including, but not limited to, Ohm's law; voltage, current, resistance and power;  direct current parallel circuits, and combination circuits; magnetism and generators; and direct current circuit analysis tools.
    • Thorough working knowledge of the theory and applied principles of alternating current circuits, including, but not limited to, three-phase systems and circuit calculations for basic systems; design and function of direct current and alternating generators; series and parallel inductive reactance, capacitance and capacitive reactance.
    • Thorough working knowledge of the theory and applications of basic and advanced digital control circuits, including, but not limited to, digital logic gates, numeric displays & keyboards, asynchronous & synchronous memories and shift registers, and digital/analog converters. 
    • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local building, health, sanitation, environmental and other codes, rules, and regulations governing the installation, maintenance and operation of electrical and electronic systems, features and fixtures.
    • Thorough working knowledge of troubleshooting protocols and repair methods and procedures for electrical power distribution, lighting and electronic systems, fixtures, features and equipment.
    • Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements.
    • Knowledge of welding and soldering techniques and practices.
    • Ability to read, interpret and apply the National Electrical Code and perform calculations in electrical fundamentals and ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code.
    • Ability to read and comprehend all safety rules, regulations and requirements related to the work.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, building drawings and manufacturer’s operating and preventive maintenance manuals.
    • Ability to interact positively and objectively with coworkers, supervisors, facility users, and members of the general public from widely diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
    • Ability to layout work and estimate time and materials to properly complete installation, replacements and repairs.
    • Skill in the use and operation of manual and power tools commonly used in the electrical and electronic trades.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses or other devices, to properly align wiring, cables, circuitry, lighting fixtures, panels and other electrical and electronic system and equipment components.
    • Must have sufficient color discrimination to identify and correctly match color-coded pairs of wires.
    • Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses or other devices, to read and interpret data displayed on a digital equipment and controllers.
    • Must be able to move, raise, and lower electrical power distribution, lighting and electronic safety and security system components.
    • Must possess sufficient manual dexterity and ability to rotate wrists, elbows and shoulders to employ manual and power tools commonly used in the installation and maintenance of electrical power distribution and lighting systems and electrical and electronic equipment and devices.
    • Must be able to access electrical and electronic system components and equipment mounted in ceilings and walls and at floor level.
    • Must be able to work above shoulder level for extended periods of time.
    • Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, dirt, pollen and other airborne contaminants.
    • Must be able to tolerate exposure to high noise levels.
    • Must be able to work in close proximity to 440-volt power sources and moving mechanical hazards.
    • Must be able to enter and maneuver in confined spaces in order to access and perform work on electrical power distribution and electronic systems and components.

     

    NOTES:

    1. Candidate must be able to pass required FBI fingerprint-based criminal history record check in addition to pre-hire and random drug and alcohol screenings.  Candidate must also maintain an appropriate level airport badge at all times.
