    Job Overview:

    Mears is seeking a construction estimator for the electric utility industry. Primary responsibilities include timely and accurate development of bids and proposals for the management and construction of electric utility distribution and transmission systems and substations. Typical projects include electric system installation, relocation, and replacement projects in the public right-of-ways and private easements. The successful applicant should possess practical field knowledge of the methods related to this type of work, as well as excellent communication and organization skills.

    What Do You Offer Us?

    Build and submit estimates (bids):

    • Review RFP packages provided by the customer.
    • Review work requirements with local operations management.
    • Research and define cost elements related to project construction including labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors.
    • Identify risks and develop project contingencies.
    • Prepare a written proposal outlining clarifications, exceptions, and assumptions.
    • Present final draft to upper management for final determination and risk assessment.
    • Submit the approved final bid to the customer by the stated due date.

    Attend customer scheduled pre-bid meetings:

    • Notate essential topics of discussion at the meeting.
    • Attain a thorough understanding of the scope of work including desired construction methods, project timelines, and customer expectations.
    • Ask project-related questions and record customer responses.
    • Visit the job locations to assess site conditions and assess constructability.

    Project Management/post-award follow-up:

    • Provide job-related documentation to field operations, project management staff, and back office/administrative staff as needed.
    • Participate in contract pre-planning meetings.
    • Assist in preparing and submitting project/contract deliverables to the customer as required by the contract and Mears/InfraSource internal requirements.
    • Proactively identify known or anticipated construction problems and suggest solutions to minimize cost and mitigate risk.
    • Assist field personnel in developing and/or recommending change orders as needed.
    • Negotiate positive resolutions with customers on any disputes that may arise.
    • Maintain files as a backup for estimate figures.

    What is Required?

    • Expert in MS Office Applications: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
    • Expert organizer (notes, files, documents, etc.).
    • Proficient in Technical Writing/Correspondence.
    • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with minimum guidance.
    • Familiar with Accubid software.
    • Occasional travel.
    • A four-year degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Bachelor s degree in Construction Management or Engineering preferred.
