    Brief Summary of Job Duties:

    Under the general supervision of the Lead Exhibition Designer, the Museum Preparator assists in exhibition design and supervises interior and exterior art installations throughout campus. Acts as liaison between the museum and academic departments for installations and exhibitions. Works with exhibition vendors and service providers, as needed to complete installations. Assists with general collection maintenance and inventory tasks.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of preparatory experience in a museum field; or graduation from college with a major in a selected discipline, and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Thorough subject-area knowledge in the methodologies of art handling and installation.
    • Thorough knowledge of museum practices, procedures, and ethics, especially as related to collections care and
    • Knowledge of, and ability to use tools that are needed for art handling and installation including building crates/
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to record, manage, and process data.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelors degree in Fine Arts.
    • 1-3 years of experience working in a museum, gallery or other art space.

    Special Conditions of Employment

    • Driver's License (U08): Must maintain valid CA DL, a clean DMV record and enrollment in DMV Pull-Notice Program.
    • Satisfactory conviction history background check

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

    • 50% Workshop Assistant - Assists in exhibition installations, using skills in construction and fine carpentry, metal, ceramics, painting, requiring wide knowledge of art installation techniques and strategies.
    • 20% Collection Registration - Keeps track of inventories and maintains a high-level of organization in the collections and storages. Assists with the needs of the Museum’s art collection, Architecture and Design Collection (ADC) and facilities.
    • 10% Collections Maintenance - Coordinates interior and exterior art installations throughout campus, including those with other departments and entities. Maintains outdoor sculpture collection.
    • 10% Installation & Exhibition Coordination - Acts as liaison between the museum and both the Departments of Art and the History of Art and Architecture for installations and exhibitions.
    • 10% Transportation of Art - Works in the local and regional community as liaison to move, install, and retrieve works from donors and patrons along with other cultural institutions.
