Location: Temple Beth Emeth, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Compensation: $65,000 - $80,000 and healthcare, other benefits
Reports to:  Rabbi and Executive Director
    FTE: 12-month, full-time

Temple Beth Emeth (TBE) is a vibrant Reform Jewish congregation with a commitment to engaging young people in Jewish education that inspires them to thrive as Jewish individuals, both now and in the future.  As the largest congregation in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area, TBE’s warm and welcoming community includes active families across races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, and mindsets.  Over 180 students in preschool through twelfth grade are enrolled in our Terri A. Ginsburg Religious & Hebrew School. Students participate in classes and other programming led by our 20 dedicated and passionate teachers and staff and supported by 20 teenage madrichim.

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Director of Education to lead TBE’s religious school and cultivate a student-centered culture that sparks joy, fosters deep Jewish learning, and nurtures the minds and hearts of children. TBE is committed to building upon the strong foundation of our religious school by exploring new and innovative approaches.  Therefore, we are in search of a visionary leader who possesses the ability to think creatively and drive transformative educational change.  We are also looking for a director who will continue to build community and foster meaningful connections with and among our students and their families.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Visionary Leadership:

    • Refine and articulate a compelling mission and vision for the school, in collaboration with strategic partners, and lead efforts to align, enhance, and strengthen the educational program accordingly.
    • Demonstrate consistent and active leadership during school sessions to foster a positive educational environment.  (School is currently held on Saturday mornings, Sunday evenings, and Wednesday afternoons.)
    • Recruit, hire, and effectively orient and train new religious school and Hebrew school teachers.
    • Supervise teachers and provide ongoing guidance and training on effective instructional practices, curriculum, and classroom culture.  Facilitate individual meetings, training seminars, professional development opportunities, instructional coaching, and classroom observations.
    • Lead curriculum development work with input from senior staff and teachers, where appropriate; evaluate, revise, and/or create meaningful curriculum, aligned across grade levels.
    • Foster community and meaningful relationships with and among families by providing consistent and proactive communication, resolving issues or concerns, and implementing family programming in collaboration with the Director of Engagement & Lifelong Learning, and senior rabbi.
    • Continuously track research and emerging issues in the fields of Jewish education, pedagogy, and child development.
    • Promote extracurricular youth programming and youth groups; design and implement initiatives to increase tween and teen engagement.

    Administrative Leadership:

    • Oversee the administration and management of the religious school.
    • Manage religious school budget in collaboration with the Finance Committee and TBE senior staff.
    • Supervise and collaborate with all school administrative staff.
    • Organize special events and trips during and beyond religious school.
    • In partnership with TBE’s Committee for Education and Youth, help organize and promote fundraising projects to benefit the religious school.
    • Collaborate with TBE’s Committee for Education and Youth and engage in monthly committee meetings.

    Skills and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or combination of education and relevant experience required; Master’s degree in Jewish Education, Education, Judaic Studies, or equivalent or combination of education and relevant experience desired.  Experience with formal or informal Jewish education and youth programming is highly desired.
    • Substantial experience working with children and adolescents; deep knowledge of and appreciation of their intellectual, social, and emotional development.
    • Strong Jewish knowledge; the ability and eagerness to serve as the leader of a religious school that reflects and fosters Reform Jewish values and practices.
    • Experience designing student-centered learning; deep understanding of curriculum, effective instructional practices, learning processes, experiential education, and the needs of diverse learners, including neurodiverse students and students with disabilities.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills; the ability to engage and collaborate effectively with students, parents/caregivers, and teachers and to project care, leadership, and judgment.
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills.

    Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

    • Bring enthusiasm, humor, fun and joy to their work on behalf of and with students.
    • Be an innovative thinker and creative problem solver with curiosity about out-of-the-box religious education models.
    • Value and embrace diversity, exhibiting a high degree of cultural competency and demonstrated success in working with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Work effectively and adaptively under pressure while maintaining an open, optimistic, and growth-oriented mindset.
    • Be a lifelong learner, committed to professional growth and collaboration.

    A Unique Professional Experience:

A Unique Partnership—Sharing a building:  One reason TBE is unique among congregations is our 50-year-old Genesis project, under which we co-own our building and share our space with a welcoming partner congregation, St. Clare’s Episcopal Church. Our sanctuary is used by both congregations and every single space in the building is used almost daily.  In a time with greater focus on minimizing environmental footprints and maximizing usage, we are proud of our longstanding relationship.  However, sharing the building presents additional challenges for classroom and programming space, at times requiring flexibility and creative solutions.  Continuing to navigate these logistical challenges, while at the same time strengthening our relationship with St. Clare’s will be an ongoing part of the job here at TBE.

A Unique City—GO BLUE!  Living in Ann Arbor means living with the University of Michigan in our backyard. The positive impact of UofM and other universities such as Eastern Michigan University, make living and working in Ann Arbor enjoyable and exciting. We gain access to a very Jewishly knowledgeable student base who can serve as our religious school teachers. Many of the college professors and staff are members of TBE.  Our membership is often willing to share their expertise with the congregation and staff.

We welcome applicants of every background, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, disability status, marital status, and sexual orientation.

The essential functions and basic skills have been included.  It is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all functions, responsibilities, skills and abilities.  Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate. This position description is subject to change at any time.

To apply: Please submit resume and cover letter by email to DirEdSearch@templebethemeth.org.  List of references will be requested later in the process.  Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.  For more information about this position, contact Jenna Goldenberg, Education Director Search Committee Chair, at DirEdSearch@templebethemeth.org.
