Being an Editor ensures that all content meets required and accepted format and standards. Evaluates content for clarity, accuracy, and consistency. Additionally, Editor may coordinate with creative team to produce final drafts. Requires a bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The San Marcos Daily Record publishes five days a week keeping up with one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. Throughout its 111 year history, the Daily Record has been considered one of the top publications in the region consistently winning statewide contests.
San Marcos is a beautiful blend of a local community and a college town, as the home of Texas State University, while also thriving in the juxtaposition between a growing city and protecting the one-of-a-kind Hill Country environment centered around the crystal-clear San Marcos River.
The Daily Record is looking for a full-time managing editor to oversee the day-to-day editorial production of the paper. The managing editor helps organize and contribute to coverage of general assignments, government, business, editorials and features, including planning, assigning and editing content, overseeing production schedules and supervising editorial staff. The position also will include some photography and website work including helping schedule social media posts utilizing Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and designs, or oversees, a five-day newsletter.
The managing editor will work with each editorial member to foster and develop necessary stories for each edition but is also a key member of the editorial staff writing stories and taking photos. The managing editor works closely with other department heads, including advertising, circulation and press, as well as the publisher to ensure day-to-day functions are running smoothly.
The position is part of a news team that produces the newspaper and monthly niche products including the San Marcos Chamber Welcome Guide and neighborhood-based quarterly magazines.
The ideal candidate would be a positive, organized self-starter with a passion for community journalism, a desire to be involved, and an eye toward the future of our industry. Must have strong writing and communication skills, and a nose for feature and business stories. As this an active market, there is weekend and evening coverage.
Five years experience preferred and journalism bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred. Health benefits and 401(K) plan offered.
