Overview
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Chief Economist and the Chief of Staff, the Economist will be responsible for leading Authority-wide and program specific research projects in order to support the achievement of EDA’s mission and business objectives. The Economist will assist the Chief Economist with all responsibilities entailing data analysis, econometric modeling, content generation, and thought leadership.
$65,484 - $95,230
Note: The NJEDA currently offers a hybrid work schedule for up to 2 days of telecommute work from home. To participate, you will be required to have high speed home internet access and a managers approval. This program does not supersede the "New Jersey First Act", which requires newly hired NJEDA employees to establish and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides economic and data analytics for leadership within the NJEDA and across partner agencies.
- Provides economic research alongside the Chief Economist in order to create an empirical foundation for the EDA’s current and future products.
- Aides the Policy & Data Analytics team with economic impact modeling interpretation.
- Conducts long- and short-term research on economic trends and leads the production of economic research reports, such as dashboards, periodic chartbooks, and white papers, to provide EDA with insights into New Jersey’s economic fundamentals.
- Partner with business units and program/program teams to compile and analyze data and report actual results compared to expected performance, which will be provided to the board on a quarterly, year-to-date and life-to-date basis.
- Partner with program/product teams to develop, define or memorialize, as applicable, program-level goals for new and existing programs to enable stronger performance evaluation efforts.
- For new and existing programs, partner with program/product teams to develop key performance indicators that can be used to review and evaluate programs for effectiveness and impact.
- Work with Product Development team and product owners to develop and maintain a list of all active Authority programs and one-page summaries of each.
- Ensures department practices and processes are in compliance with EDA policies and guidelines and are consistently applied.
- Responsible for advising the Chief Economist, and the CEO on economic analysis and policy development and implementation.
- Works cross organizationally to achieve alignment, integration and successful implementation of economic research and analysis into NJEDA policy and programs.
- Evaluates the Authority’s various programs by developing key performance indicators and metrics to measure each program’s financial, efficiency, equity, and economic development impact.
- Promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff and external customers.
- Maintains knowledge of the main sources, providers and publishers of relevant data and facts and figures, including free and fee-based vendors, to ensure EDA’s strategy and activities is supported by comprehensive and accurate data.
- Must complete annual and semiannual self-assessment as required.
- Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.
Qualifications
Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of economic analysis techniques, including applied econometrics, and experience engaging in primary and secondary research, interpreting data, and performing original empirical analyses.
- A strong understanding of the strengths and limitations of economic development strategies and theories and analysis of market externalities.
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead research and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to write clearly, and work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team of lawyers, researchers, communications staff, and senior management.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and EDA staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; proficient in grammar, spelling and editing; and foster communications with business professionals and EDA staff
- Ability to prioritize workload, must be highly organized, detail-oriented, handle various tasks simultaneously and work independently within limited time constraints with little or no supervision
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and EDA staff

- NJEDA utilizes Microsoft as the core application platform and proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in using large databases and statistical packages (Stata, Matlab, SAS, R, Gauss,TSP, RATS, PROCSQL), or other significant computer programming experience (Java, C , Mathematica etc.).
Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Economics or relative field, or equivalent experience
- 7 Years of relative experience
Advanced degree or industry specific certification may be substituted for 1 year of experience

- As necessary to events, meetings, businesses, etc.
Certificates and Licenses Required
- License: Staff are required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essentials duties of the position.
