Distance Learning and Education Director manages administrative functions of the distance learning program. The Distance Learning and Education Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     ABOUT THIS POSITION

    Summary:

    Reporting to the AVP for Academic Affairs for Faculty Success, The Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the institution’s distance and online education strategy. The successful candidate will lead a team of professionals in the design, development, and delivery of online courses and programs, ensuring the highest standards of quality, accessibility, and student engagement.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.
    •Works closely with institutional leaders and academic departments to develop a vision and long-term strategy for online and hybrid learning that aligns with the University strategic plan.
    •Supervises and mentors the distance education and online team, including hiring and training, evaluating, and establishing work priorities.
    •Assists with strategic planning, resource allocation, and budgeting for distance and online education.
    •Designs and oversees faculty professional development opportunities related to online learning including creating and delivering online courses and programs and successful use of the LMS.
    •Provides oversight and direction for the collaborative design, development, and review of course and program projects that are consistent with the University strategic plan and that meet the needs of students and faculty.
    •Administers the LMS and collaborates with internal and external partners on implementation projects and resolution of technical issues; makes recommendations for program and technology enhancements, as appropriate.
    •Collaborates with units across campus to promote communication and resources and resolve student and faculty concerns related to online learning.
    •Stays abreast of new developments, best practices, and accreditation compliance issues related to distance courses, makes recommendations regarding policy changes, and communicates and implements policy changes.
    •Ensures timely completion of NC-SARA renewal and data requirements, national surveys, and other federal or state required reporting.


    Minimum Qualifications Required:
    •Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Education, Higher Education, or related field
    •Demonstrated knowledge or application of instructional design theory and principles, instructional technology, and adult learning theory
    •3-5 years of instructional design experience collaborating/consulting with faculty in a higher education environment, including support for online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses
    •Excellent leadership skills
    •Experience providing professional development for faculty and managing design and development projects with a team-centric approach 
    •Experience administering learning management systems such as D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle
    •Experience with Quality Matters Rubric & Standards 
    •Proficiency with virtual meeting and video applications 
    •Strong written and oral communication
    •Analytical and problem-solving skills
    •Ability to work well with diverse populations

    Preferred Qualifications:
    •Higher education teaching experience
    •Experience with D2L Brightspace
    •Quality Matters certifications and involvement in online learning organizations
    •Experience with content-based and technology-based Open Educational Resources (OERs)
    •Supervisory experience
