Diet Technician screens and identifies patients with nutritional risk using scoring guidelines and initiates referrals for dietetic assessment. Institutes basic nutrition plans including individualized menu plans and monitors intake and acceptance of required meals and supplements. Being a Diet Technician computes analysis of patients intake and calorie count results. Requires an associate degree. Additionally, Diet Technician typically requires Dietetic Technician - Registered (DTR). Typically reports to a dietitian. The Diet Technician works under moderate supervision.     Summary

    Screens all inpatients for nutritional risk according to Nutrition Screening and Assessment Policy and department standards.

    Provides nutrition care and education for Moderate, Low, and Not Currently at Nutrition Risk (NCR) patients, as well as specified high risk patients, under the supervision of the Registered Dietitian.

    Addresses Body Mass Index, food allergies and intolerances, and drug nutrient interactions according to department standards.

    Responsible for requisition, inventory, feeding preparation and staff training for Milk Depot and hospital wide Enteral Nutrition.

    Preceptor of dietetic interns and nutrition students. This position reports to Director of Nutrition Services.

    Education

    Two years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Associates Degree) or 4 Year Degree in Nutrition.

    Certification, Registration & Licensure

    Registration required : Diet Technician Registered (DTR) OR 4 year degree in Nutrition.

    Experience

    2 years experience in hospital clinical nutrition is preferred.

    Responsibilities

    Completes Nutrition Screening and Assessment according to Nutrition Services Screening, Assessment, and Care Policy.

    Develops and implements Nutrition Intervention, Monitoring and Evaluation (follow-up) according to Nutrition Services Policy.

    Collaborates with Healthcare team and participates in Patient Care Huddles.

    Documentation of Nutrition Care Process and Tracking of Productivity.

    Inspects meals served to assure quality of food and accuracy of diet order.

    Instructs and educates patients and families in nutritional principles, special diets and food selection.

    Provides nutrition education / information to dietetic interns, nutrition students and others.

    Collaborates with RDs, other techs, Diet Office Staff, Nutrition Call Center Staff, and Ambassadors.

    Works under direction of Registered Dietitian.

    Infant formula, Human Donor Milk and Enteral Nutrition products.

    Performs other duties as assigned.
