The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) is the only museum in San Francisco devoted to craft and design. Founded in 2004, MCD showcases designers, makers, and artists through an exciting and distinctive series of craft and design-focused exhibitions and public programs. MCD seeks a skilled and personable Store Associate to join our team.

Under the direction of the Museum Store Manager, this position assists in the daily operations of the museum store. Store Associates are the face of MCD and hold a variety of important responsibilities. While Associates generally remain in the store area of the museum, this position occasionally requires some gallery ambassador responsibilities in the museum exhibition areas.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Warmly greet visitors as they enter the museum and collect admission fees.
    • Assist in all day-to-day store operations. Excellent retail sales skills. Contemporary jewelry sales experience is a plus.
    • Provide quality customer service; stock, tag, and sell store merchandise; become familiar with store merchandise and engage with shoppers to answer questions and generate sales; be knowledgeable about the museum, and exhibitions; keep the museum store clean, tidy and dust-free.
    • Explain MCD policies regarding photography and handling the artwork to all visitors (including occasionally making policy announcements to groups of visitors when they arrive).
    • Act as a gallery ambassador on occasion, generally during events or when there are large groups of visitors.
    • Alert office staff to large groups visiting or any issues in the gallery so that a staff member can act as gallery security, as needed.
    • Awareness and support of events and programs, working closely with key departments including Programs, Membership, Development, Curatorial, and Administration to help develop and implement successful outcomes.

    Additional Responsibilities and Information

    • As this position involves cashier duties, Associates are entrusted with various cash handling and loss prevention responsibilities.
    • Associates are expected to possess a friendly demeanor and to dress professionally and appropriately for a museum environment.
    • Knowledge of the museum’s mission, exhibitions, and events calendar by speaking with other museum employees and by visiting MCD’s website regularly to stay up to date.
    • Associates are to check the reception@sfmcd.org email account and calendar at the beginning of each shift for updates on the store, museum, and to ascertain if any tour groups are expected.
    • Store Associates are hourly, non-exempt employees of MCD and hired on an at-will basis.

    Job Requirements

    • Art practice, or art history, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
    • Retail experience in an art, craft, or design oriented environment or high-end specialty store.
    • Demonstrated experience and passion for the arts. Previous gallery or museum experience is a plus.
    • Excellent salespersonship.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated trustworthiness, punctuality, and dependability; willingness to work a flexible schedule.
    • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in a team environment.
    • Initiative in identifying areas for improvement.

Also included are the uninhabited Farallon Islands, 27 miles (43 km) offshore in the Pacific Ocean. The mainland within the city limits roughly forms a "seven-by-seven-mile square", a common local collo...
