Job Description: Solar Designer

The Solar Designer is primarily responsible for conducting site assessments on potential projects, inventorying and recording the design variables of the site, adapting the overall solar system design to those variables, and producing AutoCAD drawings in support of our sales and design processes. This requires both in-office and field work, as this position visits prospective clients’ properties to assess both rooftop and ground locations for solar array placement, as well as to take measurements, photographs, and other recordings of site-specific information. Then this individual returns to the office to adapt the system design and create the AutoCAD drawing of the site.

Basic Qualifications:

• AutoCAD LT experience
• Construction experience
• Experience and comfort working on roofs (ability to safely access and climb across steep roofs to take measurements and determine solar array layouts)
• PDF editing experience
• Customer service experience
• Able to lift 45 pounds unassisted

Preferred qualifications:

• Solar experience (field or office)
• Familiarity with the National Electric Code, International Fire Code, and other building codes
• Bluebeam software experience
• Drone piloting experience and/or FAA Remote Pilot Certification
• OSHA safety training

Essential Functions

• Coordinate with Sales Team and Project Managers to identify projects for measurement and design
• Drive to the project site and use a ladder to access the roof
• Determine the condition of the roof, complete a shading analysis, and take measurements
• Determine ground-mount solar array site locations and routing of trenched circuits
• Assess and photograph the electrical service panel(s) and roof structural system(s)
• Produce design documentation in AutoCAD, including but not limited to:

- Project plan sets (inc. but not limited to electrical one-line diagram, electrical notes, mechanical specs, site plan, placard specs, cut sheets, and shop drawings as needed)

- Site Plans and Electrical Drawings for project interconnection applications

- Site Plans and Electrical Drawings for feasibility studies

- As-built documentation (array layout, string maps, etc.)

- Create, manage, and update design drawing templates

• Adapt the overall mechanical design for attaching the array to the roof
• Adapt the overall electrical design (including the method of system interconnection, consideration of existing electrical infrastructure, and determining the need for electrical service upgrades, trenched distribution circuits, etc.
• Other duties as assigned
