    Position Summary:

    Under the supervision of the Director of Digital Education, the Instructional Designer is an integral member of Gordon-Conwell’s Digital Education initiatives. The Instructional Designer will assist faculty with developing excellent learning experiences in digital environments, including providing training on relevant technologies. This Instructional Designer will support faculty in coordination with the rest of the Digital Education team.


    • It is strongly preferred that the Instructional Designer be local to a Gordon-Conwell campus and able to work from campus two or more days per week.


    Key Responsibilities:

    • User Support: With the Director of Digital Education and any student employees, provide a welcoming environment (in the physical office and/or virtually) for users of educational technology resources at Gordon-Conwell. Solve problems, provide assistance, conduct one-on-one training as necessary and ensure follow-through on outstanding user issues. Build cross-departmental relationships and coordinate with Media/Technology Services as necessary to provide excellent service to all constituencies. Understand the classroom technology at the campus and be able to coach faculty as needed on the best strategies for using it.
    • Instructional Design: Assist faculty in the design and curation of excellent digital resources for fully online, hybrid and fully live courses at Gordon-Conwell. Collaborate with faculty and the Digital Education team in identifying and communicating best practices in digital education, including by creating learning guides, tutorials and needed training materials to advance shared objectives and address gaps and deficiencies.
    • Liaise between the campus where he/she works and Digital Education: Take initiative in communicating needs and concerns specific to that campus’ faculty, students and staff in conversation with the rest of the Digital Education team. Ensure that Digital Education policies, processes, and services are contextualized for the campus. Represent Digital Education at campus events that have been agreed upon by the Dean and the Director of Digital Education.
    • Perform other duties as necessary.


    Required Competencies

    • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of LMS usage with experience in administrative capacity coordinating course sites. Experience with Student Information Systems in a capacity accessing student records, course records, and creating and modifying data. Ability to provide support with basic OS and features of Mac and Windows platforms. Full competency with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to use web conferencing software (e.g., Zoom) with webcam for student and faculty support. Experience with website content maintenance.
    • Customer Service: Strong customer service skills with ability to display empathy with all constituents. Commitment to a high level of confidentiality and attention to detail is required.
    • Communication and Interpersonal Effectiveness: Must have excellent listening, writing, and verbal communication skills. Must demonstrate capable and consistent decision-making skills and problem-solving ability. Must collaborate and serve in a team environment that requires collegiality and collaboration with other seminary offices. Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese a plus.
    • Cultural intelligence: Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and ability to work with individuals or groups with diverse backgrounds.
    • Organization and Adaptability: Able to manage time well in order to accurately perform detailed work while also adapting, collaborating, and serving in a team environment with collegiality and regular collaboration across matrixed, multi-campus environment.


    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or commensurate experience; graduate work in a field related to the seminary’s educational mission is a plus.
    • 3 years of demonstrated familiarity working with digital education administrative systems (i.e., LMS and SIS) with subject matter expertise in educational technology and online teaching and learning practices.
    • Experience in lay or clergy local church ministry, para-church ministry, or missionary work (anticipated paths of most graduates) preferred, specifically in a seminary or divinity school setting would be ideal.
    • Experience working in a decentralized, multi-location organization is ideal.
