Additionally, Dean of Sciences requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Sciences manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Sciences typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Assistant Dean & Director of Education Abroad is part of the Office for Undergraduate Education in Emory College of Arts and Sciences. Supports the student experience in study abroad and ensures that Emory-affiliated programs offer students the opportunity to enrich their Emory education and develop into global citizens.

     

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    • Responsible for a well-established study abroad program, offering more than 90 semester and academic year programs and about 25 summer programs, in more than 40 countries, serving approximately 600 students per year.
    • Works closely with the faculty committee and with department representatives to ensure program quality and course offerings that contribute toward students' progress toward graduation. Understands the curricular and financial demands of the Emory-affiliated programs.
    • Oversees $1.6 million program and operating budgets. Collaborates with the Pathways Center to support international experiential learning, including internships and research abroad.
    • Works closely with the University Global Strategy and Initiatives office, and other study abroad programs on campus to address and reduce risks associated with study abroad.
    • Together with the Education Abroad staff, the Assistant Dean & Director will manage student cases at times of personal or regional crises.
    • An individual familiar with risk management is important in this position. Supervises staff direct reports and works with other associated staff. Performs other related duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • A PhD or a comparable terminal degree, and three years of experience in a leadership position in a university study abroad office is required, and familiarity with budgeting is important. Experience supervising staff is helpful.
    • Knowledge of best practices in the field of international education, and participation in national organizations is preferred.

    Assistant Dean & Director of Education Abroad

    Emory College of Arts and Sciences, the largest school in Emory University, is seeking an Assistant Dean and Director of Education Abroad.  The Assistant Dean should prioritize supporting the student experience in study abroad and ensure that Emory-affiliated programs offer students the opportunity to enrich their Emory education and develop into global citizens.

    • International experience is an integral part of a liberal arts education.  Emory College of Arts and Sciences continues to expand the international perspective and understanding of its students by providing opportunities to study for a substantial time in another country (in a variety of forms and formats) and to engage with other cultural perspectives.  Such an education abroad experience not only fosters understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of cultures other than our own, but it also promotes a better, more discerning understanding of the diversity of our communities  Education abroad experiences are essential to the development and preparation of students for the future; therefore, students in all disciplines and programs of Emory College of Arts and Sciences should be offered the opportunity to spend a summer, semester, or year outside the U.S.  Moreover, education abroad opportunities should be available to all students regardless of financial need.  Education Abroad strives to represent a diversity of disciplines, destinations, and student demographics in its offerings.
    • The Assistant Dean is responsible for a well-established study abroad program, offering more than 90 semester and academic year programs and about 25 summer programs, in more than 40 countries, serving approximately 600 students per year.  The experiences include programs in universities, in consortia, in study abroad organizations, and in Emory-organized and –run programs.  A small number of exchange students from partner universities study at Emory and are supported by this program.  In this search we are looking for an individual with significant experience working in a university with a variety of types international partners.  Individuals who have been involved only as study abroad providers outside of a university office will not meet the needs of this office.  There is an expectation that the Director will be involved with and active in national organizations related to Education Abroad.
    • The Assistant Dean works closely with the faculty committee and with department representatives to ensure outstanding program quality and course offerings that contribute toward students’ progress toward graduation.  Most of the summer and some academic year programs are developed and run by Emory faculty, and the Assistant Dean needs to be aware of the curricular and financial demands of those Emory-run programs.  Study Abroad budgets overseen by the Assistant Dean include a $1.6 million program and operating budgets. 
    • The Assistant Dean needs strong management skills to organize and expedite the work of the office, including management of 4 direct reports and work with other associated staff. Emory University and Emory College of Arts and Sciences are committed providing access for all students to study abroad and is looking for a person with a demonstrated track record in outreach to underserved populations.  Recent changes in the general education requirements obligate all undergraduates at Emory to undertake one experiential learning experience, and education abroad is one option. 
    • Education Abroad collaborates with the Pathways Center to support international experiential learning, including internships and research abroad. Not only does Emory allow students to use need-based and merit aid toward study abroad, but the office supports students applying for national awards like the Gilman Scholarship and the Critical Language Scholarship.  There are also internal awards for use toward the costs of study abroad.
    • The Assistant Dean of Education Abroad works closely with the University Global Strategy and Initiatives office, and other study abroad programs on campus to address and reduce risks associate with study abroad.  Together with the Education Abroad staff, the Assistant Dean will manage student cases at times of personal or regional crises.  An individual familiar with risk management is important in this position. 

    Requirements for the position:  PhD or a comparable terminal degree is required.  At least five years of experience in a leadership position in a university study abroad office is required, and familiarity with budgeting is important.  Experience managing staff is helpful.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous international living/work and/or educational experiences.
    • Demonstrates an interest in supporting and working with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
    • A strong interest and ability to promote opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion in study abroad.
    • Knowledge of best practices in the field of international education, and participation in national organizations.

     

    NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
