Dean of Pharmacy manages administrative functions of the college of pharmacy. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Pharmacy leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Pharmacy requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Pharmacy manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Pharmacy typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Office of Research and Graduate Studies supports and promotes the research, scholarly, and creative activities of the SOP community while encouraging compliance and scholarly integrity. The Office is also responsible for promoting graduate student success through curricular and programmatic offerings that positions students for career success. The School of Pharmacy invites you to apply for our Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies position.

    Chief Purpose of this position: 

    Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies serves as a senior member of the leadership team and is responsible for the Office of Research and Graduate Studies’ strategic planning, academic program development, and support of graduate student recruitment and retention efforts. The Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies actively seeks and supports innovations in research and graduate studies that build transformative academic, professional, and grant-funded opportunities for School of Pharmacy students, trainees, faculty, and staff.

    The Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies will play a critical role in shaping and operationalizing the School’s vision for our research and graduate programs. This is a tremendous opportunity to build on current program excellence and enhance the competitiveness of the School’s outstanding research, creative, and scholarly activities and graduate programs.

    Responsibilities: 

    • Research, Scholarship, & Funding: With the overarching goal to increase research collaborations and funding, the Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies will coordinate and facilitate efforts to identify funding opportunities and enhance internal and external collaboration. Ultimately, the Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies is responsible for providing leadership in strategic planning for achievement of the research and scholarly mission of the School. In doing so, the Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies will lead efforts for development and continuous improvement of school-wide systems and infrastructure (i.e. fiscal, physical plant, and human capital) that support faculty members in development of programs of research – inclusive of grant applications and grant management.
    • Faculty Development & Support: The Associate Dean will collaborate with department chairpersons to support individual faculty members in development and implementation of research and scholarship programs while implementing faculty development programs related to the emerging sciences of the research foci of the School and programs that support faculty at various stages of their research/scholarly careers. The individual that assumes this role will also identify opportunities for participation of faculty in leadership activities related to research at local, state, regional and national arenas.
    • Curricular Stewardship & Alumni Engagement: The Associate Dean will create a conducive environment and support curricular structures that enables qualified students the opportunity to gain sufficient mastery of their chosen fields so, by virtue of their depth and breadth of knowledge and the extent of their expertise, they may contribute significantly to those fields. The Associate Dean will also re-engage members of our alumni community to provide opportunities that expand the number and type of interactions between graduate students and graduate alumni.
    • Student Success: The Associate Dean will collaborate with the Associate Dean for Student Success to promote a conducive and inclusive learning environment that promotes graduate student success. Moreover, the Associate Dean will identify resources that support graduate student success and create professional development and co-curricular opportunities that enhance career readiness.
    • Recruitment & Admissions: The Associate Dean will collaborate with the Associate Dean for Admissions & Strategic Engagement to develop and implement annual and long-range enrollment management strategies that will complement and support the School's strategic plan. This includes designing, coordinating, and implementing the School’s recruitment plan for dual degree (i.e. Doctor of Pharmacy/ Master of Science; Doctor of Pharmacy/ Doctor of Philosophy; Doctor of Pharmacy/ Master of Business Administration; Doctor of Pharmacy/ Master of Public Health; Doctor of Pharmacy/ Certificate in Aging Studies) and graduate (i.e. Master’s and Ph.D.) program students seeking to become pharmacists or pharmaceutical scientists.
    • Staff Supervision: The Associate Dean oversees the Office Research & Graduate Studies through the direct and indirect supervision of support staff. Routine tasks and duties are delegated in accordance with University policy and guidelines. Annual written performance evaluations of personnel are conducted in timely fashion.
    • Administrative & Faculty Responsibilities: The Associate Dean maintains the traditional responsibilities of a faculty member by participating in teaching, scholarship, and service activities. These activities are coordinated with the appropriate department chair. The AD will also manage development and submission of voluntary and mandatory reports on the research projects and activities of the School and its faculty for all internal and external reporting bodies. This individual that assumes this position will also serve as the liaison between the School and the University’s Office of Research and corresponding University committees.
    • Other Assigned Duties: The Associate Dean works collaboratively with the Dean and other Associate Deans, department chairs, student leaders, School of Pharmacy faculty and other members of the University community. The Associate Dean assumes all other administrative duties as assigned by the Dean, which may relate to students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The Associate Dean represents the School on various university committees. Travel within Virginia and to national and regional meetings will be required.

    Required Qualifications: 

    • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty and administrative member at VCU.
    • Research-focused doctoral degree, with a focus in health sciences.
    • Well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multiple-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise across the School.
    • Consistent history of externally funded research.
    • Strong publication record in top tiered journals.
    • Record of effective teaching capability at undergraduate, masters and/or doctoral levels.
    • Record of effective written and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to be a participant in and leadership with a community of scholars.
    • Record of effective collaboration and leadership with intra and inter-professional teams
    • Expertise in organizational systems development and management.
    • A strong general understanding in research related policy, including e.g. human subjects, clinical trials, animal research and institutional review board.  
    • Meet criteria for appointment at rank of tenure-eligible Associate Professor/Professor.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in securing and leading NIH type program grants and/or training grants.
