Dean of Nursing manages administrative functions of the college of nursing. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Nursing leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Nursing requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires certification as a registered nurse. The Dean of Nursing manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     The Dean of the College of Nursing assumes a pivotal role characterized by both authority and accountability, serving as the steward of the academic, research, practice, and service endeavors within the College of Nursing. With fiduciary oversight, the Dean is vested with the financial authority requisite for the attainment of the College's overarching mission and visionary objectives.

     Central to the Dean's mandate is the provision of dynamic leadership encompassing both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as lifelong learning initiatives offered by the College of Nursing. In this capacity, the Dean is entrusted with ensuring the highest standards of curricular excellence, meticulous adherence to accreditation prerequisites, and alignment with the exacting standards set forth by the Missouri Board of Nursing. Furthermore, the Dean is charged with the provision of essential resources necessary to foster and sustain a culture of academic excellence.

     Directly reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Steven J.  Berberich, the Dean assumes a prominent position within the Provost's Council, a forum comprising fellow deans and vice and assistant provosts and directors. Collaborative engagement with these academic leaders is integral to the Dean's mission, aiming to harmonize the broader institutional vision and mission of the university with the unique aspirations of the College of Nursing. This harmonious synergy enables the Dean to catalyze progress toward the university's overarching objectives while advancing the distinctive mission and visionary pursuits of the College of Nursing.

     In support of these efforts, the Dean extends unwavering support to the leadership cadre within the College of Nursing and collaborates synergistically with the dedicated faculty and staff. Together, this collective enterprise strives diligently to realize the College's mission, uphold its visionary ideals, and achieve its strategic goals.

    • Provide leadership for all aspects of the College of Nursing mission, vision, and goals, and for leading the development and implementation of strategic directions within the College.
    • Works collaboratively with College of Nursing faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members in the provision of excellence in nursing education, research, and practice.
    • Identifies the fiscal, human, capital, and equipment and supply resources needed for College of Nursing programs.
    • Develops external resources through grants, contracts, and philanthropy to expand and support College of Nursing mission and goal achievement.
    • Recruits highly talented and diverse faculty and staff to carry out the College’s mission and goals.
    • Embrace and enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and a culture of belonging among faculty, staff and students.
    • Facilitates an environment that supports growth of faculty research.
    • Ensures quality in curriculum and teaching/learning strategies, including adhering to requirements of the regulatory and accreditation bodies for undergraduate and graduate nursing programs.
    • Embraces technology in support the College’s educational, clinical and research enterprises.
    • Provides leadership for ongoing evaluation of College strategic directions and use of evaluation data for continuous improvement of College of Nursing programs.
    • Ensures recruitment, retention, and graduation of diverse, academically qualified students in   College of Nursing programs.
    • Works closely with members of the College’s community of interest to ensure that academic and practice programs meet the needs of the community and are progressive and innovative in their implementation.
    • Collaborates with diverse healthcare systems in the urban and surrounding rural areas for new opportunities for nursing education, research, practice, and service
    • Forges and utilizes productive, effective relationships with other UMSL colleges, thereby providing effective advocacy for the College of Nursing.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

    • A terminal degree in nursing or related field.

      •Licensure or ability to be licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Missouri, a compact state.

      •10 years of progressively advanced administrative or leadership experiences in nursing a proven record of success in teaching, research/scholarship and service commensurate with the appointment as a tenured faculty member at the rank of Professor.

    Candidates should demonstrate in their application the following capabilities and characteristics:

    • Evidence of effective leadership and strategic planning within nursing higher education and progression in administrative positions.
    • Demonstrated evidence of innovative ideas for advancing the institution and ability to adapt to evolving trends in nursing education and healthcare.
    • Evidence of knowledge and experience with accreditation standards including from organizations like the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
    • Demonstrated evidence of financial acumen capable of managing the financial aspects of the college, including fundraising, grant acquisition, and resource allocation.
    • Dedication to student success capable of prioritizing the educational experience and support services for students.
    • Leadership skills that promote collaboration on achieving common goals that balance empathy and accountability, and that emphasize integrity, confidentiality, and tact.
    • Capable of understanding the student, faculty, and staff perspectives and effectively navigating change with a focus on stability.
    • Evidence of the ability to collaborate effectively with nursing, interprofessional colleagues, and community partners.
    • Ability to mentor faculty, staff, and students to implement a shared vision for the College of Nursing.
    • An enthusiasm for and proven record of accomplishment of raising funds from a variety of sources, including private donors, foundations, and government agencies, and through outreach to alumni.
    • Ability to facilitate evaluations of faculty members’ progress and mutual goal setting for faculty development and resources to support goal attainment as appropriate.
