    Departmental Overview

    Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE), formerly known as UCSB Extension, has served the community for over 75 years, with over 20,000 students and community members enrolled in the past decade, extending the scholarship and teaching of UC Santa Barbara beyond the borders of the campus. A self-supporting unit with 20 FTEs and a $6 million budget, PACE offers 200 courses with more than 6,000 enrollments annually. Its International Program hosts over 600 students annually. PACE offers certificate programs and professional development for UC Santa Barbara students, lifelong learning opportunities for professional growth, career-oriented training focused on current workplace needs, and educational opportunities for: pre-college and non-matriculated students. In addition, it creates custom employee training programs designed to meet the needs of companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.

    Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor (Provost) in a high-level academic staff position, the Dean provides innovative leadership and professional management for a dynamic and entrepreneurial unit, directing academic and strategic planning and program development to help UC Santa Barbara meet the needs of its students and fulfill its mission as a public research university. The Dean oversees academic and staff personnel, organizational and financial management, contract and grant management, and university engagement activities nationally and internationally, to support inclusive excellence and continue and increase the impact and quality of its programs. The Dean is responsible for successful and sustainable fiscal management of the division.

    Brief Summary of Duties

    Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Dean of Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) provides innovative leadership and professional management for a dynamic unit serving the campus and addressing educational needs of the region, state, and beyond. Oversees academic and strategic planning and program development of PaCE to help UC Santa Barbara meet the needs of its students and fulfill its mission as a public university, serving a diverse variety of non-matriculated students through educational programs and community partnerships. As a self-sustaining, entrepreneurial, and collaborative academic unit of the university, PaCE extends the scholarship and teaching of UC Santa Barbara beyond the walls of the campus to working professionals, community leaders, pre-college and lifelong learners, non-matriculated international students, and to national audiences. The Dean oversees academic and staff personnel, organizational and financial management, contact and service agreement management, and university engagement activities nationally and internationally, to support inclusive excellence and continue and increase the impact and quality of its programs. The Dean is responsible for successful and sustainable fiscal management of the unit serving as the key administrative officer.

    Required Qualifications

    • A record of achievement in working with a diverse community, creating an inclusive culture, and achieving ambitious institutional goals for equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
    • 5 years experience recruiting and developing excellent instructors, staff and students, including women and members of racially and ethnically underrepresented groups.
    • 5 years extensive and successful administrative experience in universities or similarly complex institutions, with an emphasis on self-supporting continuing education.
    • Evidence of professional engagement, public presentations, and/or publications indicating leadership in the area of continuing education and other areas of higher education.
    • 5 years experience with instructional technology and the design, implementation, and evaluation of large-scale, broadly delivered, educational offerings deploying traditional in-person classroom delivery, digital/remote/online modalities, and blended learning.
    • 5 years experience working closely with faculty members and academic leaders and within a shared-governance system to design and deliver educational programming.
    • 5 years demonstrated experience in managing staff to fulfill evolving priorities, goals, and objectives.
    • Demonstrated experience in external resource development and entrepreneurial revenue generation.
    • Demonstrated experience in managing complex budgets and in external resource development.
    • 5 years experience in financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning.
    • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Doctorate or terminal graduate or professional degree.
    • Experience in managing a university extension or other similar unit.

    Responsibilities

    Administrative, Financial, & Personnel Management (40%): As the Dean of Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE), manages, plans and administers administrative operations and general operations of PaCE, serving as the key administrative officer. Responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing resources, including oversight of agreements with service providers. Oversees the financial resources of PaCE which includes revenue-generated income and other external fund sources. Makes decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives. Oversees comprehensive analysis of PaCE's contributions to campus and system-wide concerns and initiatives. Oversees the management of the annual operational budget and effectively manages the budget. Ensures the continued financial viability of the organization through sound fiscal management and financial controls. Provides leadership in translating strategic and tactical operational plans into multi-year operating budgets, and prioritizing budget requests within the context of a campus plan. Develops and implements organizational administrative policies. Ensures that PaCE's services are in compliance with federal and state regulations, and University policies.

    Provides strong day-to-day leadership presence. Structures and leads teams to deliver outstanding services to the campus community. Establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships. Promotes a culture of high performance, lead the performance management process, enforce accountability, and develop leaders. Partners with central campus offices to develop best practices and internal processes that support the organizations' objectives. Makes decisions on administrative and operational matters and ensure achievement of the organizations' objectives (operational and budget, finance, recharge administration, human resources and FTE, IT, space planning, etc.).

    Represents the organization in campus-wide and University of California system-wide meetings and discussions, as well as with a broad range of external groups (e.g., government officials, external agencies, and the business community).

    Development of Programs, Partnerships, and Collaborations (30%): Proposes and develops new ways to deliver continuing education, leveraging PaCE's resources and agility. Introduces innovative online and other delivery modalities. Anticipates and proactively collaborates with academic leadership to identify opportunities to serve campus constituents and respond creatively to market demands. In addition, fosters innovation among staff in exploring new courses, certificates, licensing of PaCE intellectual property, and other program offerings.

    Develops and fosters partnerships with the deans and academic units across campus, including proposing new and enhancing existing partnerships; marketing and acting as a gateway to other units' programs; serving as an active innovation and experimentation hub of new modalities that could be rolled out to the academic units; and proposing new ways to better integrate PACE across the campus.

    Enhances existing and develops new revenue sharing models to provide incentives to departments and deans to collaborate with PaCE, and to generate revenue that can enhance regular academic programs.

    Enhances existing and develop new certificate programs in collaboration with academic departments that will address professional needs and aspirations of students in all disciplines and identify career pathways.

    Strategic Planning & Management (30%): Informed by data and deep knowledge of market trends and the evolving education landscape, builds upon current strengths and collaboratively shape the future strategic direction of PaCE. This includes ensuring that strategic priorities align with the broader university and academic enterprise. Communicates the strategy across campus to promote PaCE's unique value proposition. The vision reflects PaCE's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; digital-age learning innovation; educational and pedagogical experimentation; enhanced collaborations across the UC system and within UC Santa Barbara; and high-quality educational offerings for students from K-12 through retirement.

    Establishes strategic plans and objectives for Professional and Continuing Education. Provides programmatic leadership and input for implementing strategic plans, working with department directors, campus senior management, and the Office of the President. Provides effective and inspiring leadership by being actively involved in programs and services, developing a broad and deep knowledge of the organizations' programs.

    Achieves objectives through collaboration with key campus constituencies including the Academic Senate, the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, and the various dean's offices, among others. Develops policies and guidelines to carry out PaCE's mission.
