    Job Description:

    Responsible for the university's database management, ensuring availability, security and performance while also leveraging cloud technologies to scale and innovate.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Administer and maintain enterprise databases to ensure optimal performance, availability, and security.
    • Perform routine database maintenance tasks, such as backups, updates, and patching.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues promptly.
    • Maintain thorough and up-to-date documentation of database configurations, processes, and procedures to ensure knowledge retention and facilitate efficient troubleshooting and system management.
    • Implement and manage cloud-based database solutions, utilizing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
    • Migrate on-premises databases to the cloud, optimizing for scalability and cost-efficiency.
    • Leverage cloud services for high availability, disaster recovery, and data analytics.
    • Monitor database performance and proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
    • Tune SQL queries and optimize database configurations for improved efficiency.
    • Implement and enforce database security policies, ensuring data confidentiality and integrity.
    • Stay updated on industry best practices and compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and ensure database compliance.
    • Develop and maintain backup and recovery strategies to protect critical data.
    • Perform data recovery in the event of system failures or data loss.
    • Create and maintain automation scripts for routine tasks to improve operational efficiency.
    • Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) principles to manage database resources.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, system administrators, and data analysts, to support application development and data-related projects.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Requirements:

    Working after hours and on weekends to complete assigned tasks is sometimes required.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
    • Proven experience as a Database Administrator with a focus on SQL Server.
    • Strong proficiency in cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
    • Knowledge of SQL Server high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
    • Familiarity with database security best practices and compliance standards.
    • Scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automation and task execution.
    • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working in a higher education setting.
    • Certification in SQL Server or relevant cloud platform (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, AWS Certified Database - Specialty).
    • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
    • Knowledge of big data and NoSQL databases (e.g., Hadoop, MongoDB).
    • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
