Data Management Director manages the planning, designing, and developing of an organization's databases. Develops policies and procedures to lead and manage a team of database engineers. Being a Data Management Director designs and modifies procedures to ensure the performance, scalability, and security of databases. Monitors and optimizes database performance to ensure efficient data retrieval and processing. Additionally, Data Management Director evaluates existing database design to determine necessary updates and collaborates with stakeholders to determine future organizational needs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Data Management Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Data Management Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The American Express Global Privacy Office are trusted advisors on the American Express Data Protection & Privacy Principles. We work to raise privacy awareness, drive compliance with both internal privacy policies and regulatory expectations across the organization and establish privacy as a strategic differentiator for the American Express brand. As a second line of defense function, Global Privacy oversee, provide expertise in, and challenge the identification, management, and mitigation of privacy risks across the company in line with the privacy framework and the company’s vision to provide the world’s best customer experience every day. 

    This position, based in the US, is part of the Global Risk and Compliance Organization - a second line of defense risk oversight function responsible for the independent management of privacy risk globally. The role will report directly into the VP for US and Institutional Privacy, located in the UK. The successful candidate will deploy a combination of extensive data management expertise and privacy risk management expertise to support the Global Privacy Office to deliver on business-critical strategic objectives.

    How will you make an impact in this role?

    Key Responsibilities / Job Functions

    • Lead a team of Privacy and Data Risk experts to accomplish privacy risk management goals, best practices and risk mitigation strategies
    • Be the central Point of Contact for the Privacy office for all matters relating to Data Management, including interfacing with the FDOs and CDO organization
    • Champion the successful integration and effective co-existence of the new AEMP-79 Data Risk Policy and AEMP-48  Privacy Risk Management Policy
    • Lead GPO’s analysis of AEMP-79, and ensure that implications to the privacy risk management program are successfully understood and operationalized.
    • Lead GPO’s involvement in the EDM workstreams to support the closure of multiple audit Management Action Plans.
    • Own GPO’s Data Deletion programme and associated standard.
    • Build strong, collaborative relationships with First Line Business Unit partners, risk oversight functions, compliance, operational excellence, information security, GCO and many others to drive privacy best practices throughout the enterprise.
    • Provide privacy guidance, credible challenge and ongoing second line oversight to pro-actively identify and address risks.
    • Key member of VP Leadership team, able to engage and influence internally and externally.
    • Create and deliver compelling presentations for consumption by senior leadership, committees and other diverse audiences.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • 10 years’ experience in a Risk Management/Compliance/Audit role or a highly regulated domain.
    • Extensive experience in Privacy risk management, and familiarity with key regulations including GDPR and CCPA.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage risk strategically and tactically and deliver initiatives to advance the maturity and soundness of the control environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, able to create compelling arguments and influence across all levels of the organization.
    • Excellent relationship building skills to partner effectively across diverse, cross-functional teams in complex and rapidly-changing environments. 
    • Outstanding problem-solving and analytical skills, with strong learning agility and willingness to embrace and lead through change.
    • Experience leading, engaging and motivating hardworking and diverse teams through complexities to deliver results.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in any of the following domains would be beneficial (though not necessary): data subject rights, purpose limitation, data minimization, retention and deletion requirements.
    • Privacy subject matter expertise, current on industry activities and emerging trends. Professional Certification (e.g. CIPP/US, CIPM).
    • Working knowledge of privacy risk identification, assessment, and management frameworks, including designing, and implementing privacy related controls.
    • Experience working in a highly controlled environment and governing supporting policies and procedures.

    Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
