Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science or have graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and accreditation or other organization approved by HHS; or be certified in cytotechnology by a certifying agency approved by HHS (must maintain certification status in compliance with specifications for continuing education required by the certification agency.)
LICENSURE/CERTIFICAITON
Cytotechnology Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) is required. Must maintain certification status in compliance with specifications for continuing education required by the certification agency.
