Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Summary: To perform cytology procedures pursuant to established and approved protocols requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, maintain equipment and records, perform quality assurance activities related to test performance, in consultation with the Cytopathology Director.

    Education: As required by the General laws of the State of Rhode Island and including a Bachelor of Science degree and certification by an accredited school of cytotechnology or equivalent education is required, and with a current Rhode Island DPH Clinical Cytotechnologist license. Completion of a certification through a nationally recognized credentialing agency is preferred.

    Experience: Three years relevant clinical laboratory experience in an accredited diagnostic cytology laboratory is preferred.
