Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Performs microscopic examination of gynecologic and non-gynecologic slides for abnormal cellular changes. Responsible for referring appropriate cases for hierarchical review. Performs all duties in accordance with state and federal regulations. Maintains appropriate workload and quality assurance records.
