Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     About the "Department"

    • The laboratory at Montrose Regional Health is fully accredited by the Joint Commission of Accredited Healthcare Organizations and registered by the State of Colorado. It is staffed by certified medical technologists and technicians working under the supervision of two full-time pathologists. The "lab" at MRH is a fascinating, busy, and interesting place.

    About The Career:

    • The Cytologist is responsible for processing stainings and studying cells microscopically from the human body to detect evidence of cancer and other pathological conditions. Receives body materials and fluids such as blood, urine, exudates, and scrapings and performs all necessary procedures for preparation of specimen. Assumes responsibility for all Joint Commission compliant QC and QA documentation covering the cytopathology section.

    All About You:

    • Education: Must have graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation; or be licensed by a certifying agency approved by HHS. CT (ASCP) certification, IAC or equivalent required.
    • Must have 3 years of full-time experience as a cytotechnologist within the preceding 10 years.
    • Should be experienced with non-GYN cytology and fine needle aspiration techniques.
