Cytogenetic Technologist performs microscopic analysis for cytogenetic studies on biological specimens. Analyzes chromosomes for prenatal diagnosis, congenital birth defects, fertility problems and hematological disorders. Being a Cytogenetic Technologist is responsible for harvesting cells, image analysis, and results reporting. Requires a bachelor's degree. Additionally, Cytogenetic Technologist typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.     The Cytogenetic Technologist performs routine procedures for clinical fish specimens from patients who are referred for oncology testing. The responsibilities include equipment maintenance, reagent preparation, accessioning patient samples, harvesting, slide making ,slide pretreatment, including probing, microscope analysis, imaging, and preparation of diagnostic results.

    Schedule: Monday-Friday 8AM-4:30PM

    Location: 1225 northeast 2nd Avenue Portland, OR

    Job Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Routine procedures can include but not limited to : , harvesting, slide making , automated Karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing, probing, and analysis

    • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria

    • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures

    • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality

    • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.

    • Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls

    • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care

    • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures

    • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary

    • Assist with processing of specimens when needed

    • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements

    • Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory testing experience is required

    • ASCP certification in Cytogenetics, CG(ASCP)

    • Ability to work independently and within a team environment

    • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus

    • High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills

    • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen

    • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
