Job Description:
Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by maintaining, fitting, and altering uniforms for the staff and students. Coordinating and managing the time, duties, and supplies of the sewing department and staff.
This position is 40 hours/ week, 52 weeks/year.
Essential Functions
- Maintains Corp of Cadets Uniforms by performing alterations such as pant and sleeve hems, Rank changes and minor repairs.

Issues and fits Faculty and Staff uniforms, involving major and minor tailoring alterations.

Performs fittings and alterations for Service uniforms to current military standards.

Undertakes alterations and sewing projects from the community at large.

Manages the supplies and time schedule of the Sewing department. Informs the Uniform & Laundry Services Manager of any inventory or sewing space needs.

Coordinates with the Uniform & Laundry Services Manager to establish necessary timelines and communicates the needs of the shop in order to achieve deadlines.

Takes measurements and conducts fitting consultations for external Uniform requirements.

Manages workflow to insure a productive, safe and enjoyable environment.

Instructs work studies on execution of basic hand sewing, measuring, cutting, and fitting.

Contacts customers with potential questions or status updates.
Other Functions
- Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.

Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.

Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.

Uses computers, telephones, and job-related equipment, including proficiency in related systems and software.

Speaks, reads, and writes in English.

Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.

Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Job Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Additional Sewing/alterations experience may substitute education requirement.

1 year of experience or 2 years of sewing education.

Ability to operate and maintain an industrial sewing machine (Juki DDL-8700)

Ability to operate Brother serger, blind hem machine, industrial gravity iron and other machines. Or willingness to learn.

Basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)

Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 50 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus.

Work some evening or weekend hours
Environmental Conditions
- Indoor work at a sewing workstation.

Low to medium level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations and temperature changes.
