    Duties Summary

    Serves in a trainee capacity, receiving on-and-off-the job training to learn the theories, techniques and methods used in to protect life, prevent accidents, and assist persons in distress;

    enforces pool safety regulations; maintains pool and pool area; performs pool guard duties under immediate supervision; and performs other related duties as required.

    Qualification Requirements

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Overall paid or unpaid experience must be of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position.

    Note : Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks. Part-time experience will be pro-rated. Example : Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience.

    In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example : Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one-half years.

    Training & Experience : A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.

    Substitutions Allowed :

    The following may be substituted for education :

    • Four (4) years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high school diploma.
    • Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc.

    An Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc.

    If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used again towards the experience requirement.

    If work experience is used to substitute for education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be conducted by the DHR staff in order for more than one degree to be credited towards the minimum qualification requirements.

    Additional degrees can be considered if obtained independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being considered.

    Quality of Experience : Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position.

    The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he / she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he / she is being considered.

    License Requirement : At the time of appointment, the candidate selected for hire will need to possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

    In addition, the following certificates must be completed prior to completion of probation :

    • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent; and
    • American Red Cross Community Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Professional Rescuer Certificate, or certificate of completion of the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider course, or equivalent; and
    • American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Certificate or equivalent.

    • Ability to : Understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and apply the theories, techniques and methods used in to protect life, prevent accidents, and assist persons in distress and first aid methods and techniques;
    • learn the operation and maintenance of the various pool equipment; act quickly and effectively in emergency situations; swim and learn water rescue techniques;

    read and understand rules and regulations; work effectively with others; deal tactfully and professionally with the public.

    Tests : Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.

    EXAMINATION : The examination will consist of a qualifying performance evaluation.

    • When attending the qualifying performance exam, please be prompt. There will be no admittance if you are late.
    • No spectators are allowed at testing site(s).
    • The performance examination date is to be determined.

    Candidates must be able to perform :

    • 100 yard swim within 2 minutes 5 seconds.
    • Dive and retrieve weight within 45 seconds after swim.

    Candidates will be notified as to the time and place of the Physical Ability Test.

    For the Physical Ability Test, you must bring the items listed below :

    • Picture Identification, (i.e. driver's license - this is required in order to participate).
    • Admission sheet.
    • Waiver of Physician's Certification / Waiver for Claim of Injury.

    Please be prompt when reporting for all testing. NOTE. Spectators are NOT allowed at the Physical Ability Testing.

    Attire for the Physical Ability Test : Short sleeve T-Shirt, shorts, swim goggles, bathing caps, nose clip and ear plugs are permitted. Fins are NOT allowed.
