Investigator

  • Locates and interviews witnesses; utilizes public records, incident reports and other resources to obtain home and work information of witnesses; evaluates and assesses the witness's credibility and gains cooperation; asks pertinent questions, records accurate, concise and detailed notes; detects discrepancies and inconsistencies in an interview; canvasses neighborhoods for potential witnesses; observes the crime scene; and develops contacts and sources of information.

    Prepares subpoenas and serves court orders; prepares witness subpoenas and subpoenas for documents; prepares open records request; ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of documents; coordinates with various law enforcement agencies for departmental protocol as needed; and serves court orders to obtain social services records, medical records, school records, inmate records, and cell tower records or other records and documentation.

    Reviews case files and discovery; reviews discovery file including but not limited to accusation, indictment, police reports, crime scene photos, photo line-ups, police officers/detectives supplemental reports, all victim/witness statements and lab reports; evaluates case documentation; identifies inconsistencies and strengths and weaknesses in the case; and seeks additional evidence not obtained in discovery.

    Assists Public Defenders in preparation for, and during, trial; meets and collaborates with attorney in support of investigative matters in preparation in preparation for trial; assembles all evidence to be used at trial; prepares court exhibits such as maps, photos, CDs, DVDs, charts, records and demonstrative aids; attends court proceedings; assists with technology in court and during client conferences in jail; coordinates and arranges witness testimony and transportation, as needed; serves as a liaison between Public Defender, client, family members, witnesses and others during trial; and responds to emergency requests for evaluation, investigation, and/or interview last minute witnesses.

    Education:

    Bachelors' degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, or related field required; supplemented by three years of experience in law enforcement or criminal investigations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

    Work Experience/Language Skills:

    Prior law enforcement experience required. Being fluent in Spanish is strongly preferred with a salary incentive for being fluent in Spanish. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License.

    Pay: $25.47 - $42.03 per hour

    Expected hours: 37.5 per week
