Collections Handler

Job Description

Pixel Acuity, a leading heritage digitization company, is seeking a Collections Handler at an onsite location in Washington, DC from April 2024 to approximately early-August 2024 depending on project duration and needs. This position is an Independent Contractor position.

Qualifications and Experience

• Previous exposure to and knowledge of working within museums, libraries, and archives required. Experience with natural history collections is preferred
• Knowledge of Mac operating systems and associated software and hardware
• Highly organized, self-motivated with ability to work both supervised and unsupervised
• Strong communication skills and ability to work and collaborate with others

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Handle, stage, and support objects of varying fragility with care throughout the imaging process
• Prepare specimen trays for the Digital Imaging Specialist and barcode the trays using already generated barcodes and established conventions
• Follow and adhere to established imaging and collections handling procedures and expectations throughout the project
• Track and maintain pace of prepared items with production rate of the imaging team
• Maintain and track systemic organization of natural history specimens in trays and drawers (lots)
• Communicate with the imaging team throughout the digitization process
• Communicate with the Project Manager about production goals and needs

Supervision

The Collections Handler will directly report to the Project Manager and will work both independently and collaboratively. The work requires close attention to detail and closely following instructions for each project. Additional training on technical and specific tasks for this position will be provided on-site.

Physical Requirements:

• Able to lift 50 pounds
• Able to work with strobe lights that may cause eye strain for those with blue or light eyes
• Able to stand for around three hours
• Wear neutral-colored clothing

Available Work Hours:

• Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm (1 hour paid lunch)
• Hourly Rate: $20

Additional Information:

• Parking at the institution is not covered

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $20.00 per hour
