Designs and implements policies and standards that reinforce the organization's branding strategy and goals. Being a Creative Director promotes excellence in design thinking and a creative strategy for services, products and programs. Interprets stakeholder requirements to produce effective creative concepts and designs. Additionally, Creative Director recruits and develops a team of designers, copywriters, project managers and vendors. Develops creative briefs and design concepts to meet the business objectives of the organization. Studies current trends and technologies to adopt the most effective tools and techniques across all media. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Creative Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Creative Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), through its programs and facilities is a focal point of the campus where students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni and guests develop an enduring connection to the university. As a campus social hub, the SMSU assists in the retention and development of students, while encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural pluralism, gender equity, and ethnic diversity. We accomplish this by providing a variety of cultural, social, educational and recreational activities, which create an environment conducive to personal growth and development. Planned activities also provide students with leadership opportunities and employment, which promotes an active learning experience as well as relaxation, entertainment, and social interaction. As the meeting place on campus for students and organizations, the facilities provide a comfortable and relaxing environment that embodies the delivery of services important to the university community. As a bridge between formal learning and life experience, co-curricular activities coordinated by the SMSU serve as a training ground for development of student leaders.

    Work Schedule

    This is a regular, full-time, hourly position. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary in order to respond to emergency/urgent situations is required. This may include working extended hours, evenings, weekends and some holidays.

    General Purpose

    Under the direction of the Marketing Manager, the Creative Specialist ensures that the marketing and communications needs of the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) and CSUSB Recreation and Wellness are accomplished by performing the following duties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
    • Assists with the development and implementation of an organizational wide marketing and communications plan.
    • Manages the production and distribution of all advertising materials and promotional efforts and works with program areas to support their promotional needs to ensure that marketing strategies and objectives effectively reach their intended target audiences.
    • Ensures that all promotional materials are inclusive and positively represent the department, division, and university.
    • Oversees and edits student graphic design and video production work and ensures it is free of spelling and grammar mistakes.
    • Maintains archives for all projects produced by Marketing.
    • Contributes and edits content for the Santos Manuel Student Union and Recreation & Wellness website, social media, emails, digital screens, and printed materials; assist with website and social media maintenance as needed.
    • Coordinates video and design production process from start to finish.
    • Ensures brand consistency in the Santos Manuel Student Union and Recreation & Wellness design, and tone.
    • Assist in the creation of student development opportunities and planning for Social Media, Photography, Videography, and Graphic Student Design Student Assistants.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    May provide guidance and work direction to student assistants but has no formal supervisory responsibilities for appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees or addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Education and/or Experience

    Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in marketing or related field program is required and 1-2 years of professional experience preferably in Student Affairs or marketing management. Knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, merchandising, promotions, public relations and communication.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software and other related software.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Office, including Excel Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience in Photoshop, Illustrator, and PC & MAC computers preferred.
