    Position Description

    You will be accountable for leadership and direction of project controls for a large data center project, including, but not limited to insuring Fortis follows all requirements of the prime contract, monthly, subcontract/subcontractor change order administration and risk management, owner change order risk management, scheduling, and job costing compliance. You will be advising the other project leaders and staff on all cost issues, risk management, and strategy. You will be expected to deploy and ensure conformance to project specific financial strategies, process, controls and procedures to address the needs of the project as it evolves over time and ensure verticality with the prime contract as well as how it flows through to all subcontracts.

    Specific Organizational Duties

    • Provide independent, objective advice to support the project team.
    • Specialize in monitoring, tracking and analysis of budgets and costs with the preconstruction team and site based construction and accounting team.
    • Produce statistical analysis that provides an indication of project financial health, trends and potential risks and opportunities.
    • Produce and present to the owner the external monthly financial reports.
    • Develop and manage the change order process.
    • Support and advise the project accountant at billing time.
    • Provide on-site training (best practices etc.).
    • Establish and provide quality control on project specific financial process & procedures (change management, billing, close out etc.).
    • Subcontract account/risk management.
    • Overall responsibility for understanding, reporting and management of risk, cost and schedule.
    • Perform pre-job, mid project and post completion internal operational reviews (IOR) with project leadership team.

    Day to Day Detail Tasks

    • Forecasting, Labor, Material, Equipment & Other (LMEO), Non Allowable Costs and cash-flow.
    • Owner Reporting, project metrics, graphs, tracking logs and metrics.
    • ROM & Budgeting Q.C.
    • Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for MEP and other key trades.
    • Change management, QC. Change Orders compiled by PM’s & PE’s.
    • Provide Contract administration advice on change orders, billing and payments and time related issues.
    • Resolve disputed or potential disputed changes for scope and entitlement with the owner and sub-contractors.
    • Provide checks and balances for all cost related matters.
    • Manage & monitor with Site Management Owner Allowances, Construction Contingency, Yet to Buy and Cost to Complete items.
    • Review, identify and segregate surplus funds or short falls in Contract Sum.
    • Open discussions with the project leaders & then the Owner where savings or shortfalls are trending.
    • Liaise with scheduling resource to discuss the relationship between schedule updates and costs, check the relevant change orders are being entered into the schedule.
    • Assist with structuring document control.
    • Work with Fortis’ prequalification team to ensure all subs on bid list and those awarded go through our prequalification process.
    • Assist in development of site specific subcontract and attachments.
    • Report out to project sponsor and project executive monthly on status of subcontracts with focus on risk (change orders, GMP sub issues, etc.).
    • Oversee cost control manager with emphasis on:
    • Change order process & status. Job of this size move extremely fast and there is high likelihood that some subs will have significant change orders.
    • Responsible for spends forecasting with reliance on project accounting and cost control. Ensure reports are accurate and consistent.
    • Ensuring Viewpoint is updated and accurate on a monthly basis.
    • Develop one on one relationship with client finance team.
    • Report out & meet in person on spend forecasting
  • Understand and support client asset tagging; track and report out accordingly

Position Requirements

  • Strong financial background in large construction projects.
  • Deep cost forecasting, trending and analytics skills.
  • Thorough understanding of construction cost and financial reporting.
  • Ability to build positive and productive relationships with the owner’s team as well as key vendor and subcontractors you will be working with.
  • Understanding of construction contract structures and various types of such (GMP/LS/DB/etc.)


You must be able to integrate into the owner and Fortis team fast and gain their respect and trust quickly. An ability to move fast and quickly make solid strategic and financial decisions on the go is critical for success.
