Correctional Officer enforces rules and regulations in a prison, jail or other holding facility. Presides over prisoners awaiting trial or those who have been convicted of a crime. Being a Correctional Officer oversees prisoner conduct and safety. Supervises prisoners during meals, recreation, work and other daily activities. Additionally, Correctional Officer documents violations and takes appropriate disciplinary actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Correctional Officer possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Position Title: Correctional/Maintenance Officer, Uvalde County Detention Center
Effective Date: Positions filled as needed
Description & Duties:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years old, be a U.S. citizen, or naturalized alien.
Must possess at least a high school diploma \ G.E.D.
Must not have been convicted of a Class “B” misdemeanor or above.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening, physical and psychological exam. If not currently licensed, must successfully complete certified Jailers Academy and pass the Basic Jailers state licensing exam.
Work Schedule Monday-Friday 08:00 am - 5:00 pm. May be required to report to work during emergency situations.

Functions may vary by individual assignment and include but are not limited to facility maintenance, some limited plumbing, electrical, and HVAC type repairs or maintenance of systems. Must be a quick learner and a problem solver. Must be a self-starter and able to work to complete multiple tasks with little or no supervision. Ability to handle some work outside in all types of weather. Not be afraid to work around jail inmates at times.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Include reading/writing, the ability to operate a computer (Windows) and communicate on phone and in person. Some combination of sitting, twisting the upper body, reaching, bending, stooping, standing, walking, kneeling, the use of arms and hands for computer input, crouching, running, climbing, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (150 pounds).
