    • Peace Officer Standards and Training Process & Guidelines for Selection of Attendees


    • The process and guidelines for selecting employees for attending the
      Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) courses of 1) P.O.S.T. Level 2 Basic Correctional Officer course, and 2) P.O.S.T. Level 1 Basic Peace Officer course.

    • As a mandatory training requirement, attendees for P.O.S.T. Level 2, and Post Level 1, must work directly in the Orleans Justice Center Jail Facility, and/or the Orleans Justice Center Temporary Detention Center, for at least six (6) consecutive months after completion of training. The goal and purpose are to ensure sufficient and adequately trained staff are aligned to directly to jail operations. Moreover, this ensures the benefit of working directly in the jail as a priority for receiving P.O.S.T. training.

    • First priority is given to employees currently working directly in the Orleans Justice Center Jail Facility, and the Orleans Justice Center Temporary Detention Center, which is aligned to the OPSO primary mission. Moreover, applicants will be reviewed in increments of twenty-five (25) based a first apply, first reviewed, perspective.

    • Notification of Interest Published for Employees to Apply.
      • Allows Employees to be Aware of the Training Opportunity (i.e., transparency).
      • Allows Interested Employees to Apply.

    • Determination Factors to be Applied and Assessed:
      • Years of Service with OPSO (Longevity Acknowledged).
      • Based on Last Date of Hire (Not Prior Years if Departed, and Returned).
      • Good Attendance Record in Last Six (6) Months of Application Date Reflecting Proven Dependability.
      • Good Disciplinary Record in Last Six (6) Months of Application Date.


    • Physical Fitness Requirements and Standards for the OPSO Peace Officer Training Course

    • Applicants applying to the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Course must be in good physical and psychological condition to perform the essential duties and functions aligned to the job of a POST Certified Deputy. The OPSO physical fitness assessment is demanding where students are required to complete a number of fitness and agility tests (i.e., pushups, sit-ups, timed 1.5 mil run, timed 300-meter run, etc.). Perspective students need to be in great physical condition on the day the training program commences. Therefore, you are highly encouraged to start a training regimen before entering the Academy so that you are well prepared in advance.


    IMPORTANT NOTE:

    • Waivers will not be granted for the physical fitness program requirements. Students who are not able to complete the physical fitness program requirements will not be allowed to continue or complete the training program, and will not be issued a certificate of completion. This is to ensure State and regulatory compliance aligned to the respective training program are maintained.
