Correctional Officer enforces rules and regulations in a prison, jail or other holding facility. Presides over prisoners awaiting trial or those who have been convicted of a crime. Being a Correctional Officer oversees prisoner conduct and safety. Supervises prisoners during meals, recreation, work and other daily activities. Additionally, Correctional Officer documents violations and takes appropriate disciplinary actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Correctional Officer possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Detention Corporal, the employee in this position is responsible for the confinement, supervision, and well-being of suspects and convicted criminals until they are released from Ford County custody.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience: This is an entry-level position. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills within six months.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Skills: Knowledge of detention facilities and Federal, State, and local laws governing the confinement of inmates. Knowledge of proper use of emergency vehicles, radios, computers, typewriter, teletypes, and other office equipment. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, county officials, and the public.
Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Duties follow prescribed policies and procedures.

Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual budget process.
