SUPERVISOR CORRECTIONAL OFFICER

    JOB SUMMARY

    This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility (CDF) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF) locations. This position serves as one of several first line supervisors assigned to each of three shifts within the CDF and CTF Facilities. The incumbent works under the general supervision of a Captain, who sets the overall objectives.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Lieutenant is responsible for independently planning and carrying out assignments, which includes resolution of difficult or sensitive situations, utilizing a broad range of correctional leadership practices and techniques, managing and supervising a force of correctional personnel in the execution of a variety of correctional and counseling duties. Supervises shift operations ensuring assignments are posted and carried out; conducts roll call, making sure staff is aware of changes in operational security. Inspect zone and other assignments for safety/health hazard. Counsels non-supervisory staff on a variety of correctional duties related to security and inmate conduct; safety cleanliness and maintenance in the correctional settings. Ensures and/or assists in ensuring that adequate operational efficiency is maximized.

    Deploys correctional personnel in strategic and anticipatory locations to ensure and maintain productive and effective supervision of inmates and staff; as well as, timely and efficient responses to frequent, critical and/or emergency situations concerning staff/inmates of diverse backgrounds, temperament and attitude. Participate in the preparation of assignments rosters, and development of post orders. Provide for activities such as staff training and development, performance improvement, annual evaluation of subordinates officers. Provides staff support to accomplish administrative tasks associated with shift responsibilities, including reports, records, and codification of assigned responsibilities. Interface with law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations and provides pertinent information that’s needed for further investigation. Work in coordination with officials in other administrations in the Department and/or in advising supervisors and/or management officials of high rank.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

    Specialized Experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. To be creditable, at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. An example of specialized experience is the ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity and team base environment; and securing subordinate staff.

    Internal Candidates, as of the closing date of the vacancy announcement, shall have four (4) years experience as a correctional officer, and at least one (1) year continuous experience at the next lower grade level as a lead correctional officer (Sergeant).

    External Candidates, at the closing date of the vacancy announcement, shall have four (4) years experience as a correctional officer, and at least continuous experience at the next lower level as a Sergeant or supervisor and/ or have equivalent experience performing work involving the supervision of incarcerated individuals in a facility that operates on a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) day week basis.

    Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must be able to use a firearm and obtain and maintain a license to carry the firearm.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIORNMENT

    Work is performed in a Correctional Institution. Responds to calls required and as needed to return to duty.

    OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS

    Tour of Duty: Must be flexible to various work hours and assignment locations.

    3 Shifts 7am to 4pm, 4pm to 12 am & 12am to 7am.

    Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

    Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS) At-Will: At-will employment applies to the MSS. All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

    Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

    Essential Position Designation: The incumbent of this position is designated as “Essential” to the Agency.

    A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.
