Corporate Compliance Director manages the compliance programs, policies, reporting, and practices for an organization or business. Ensures that all activities follow regulatory requirements related to the governance of the organization as well as any industry-specific or location-specific laws. Being a Corporate Compliance Director oversees internal controls and auditing systems that monitor and report on regulated activities and processes. Implements risk-based compliance testing of existing procedures and controls to identify, detect, and correct noncompliance. Additionally, Corporate Compliance Director evaluates and implements changes to compliance processes due to new or amended regulations. Delivers communication and training initiatives that inform stakeholders about compliance requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Corporate Compliance Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Corporate Compliance Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     PURPOSE STATEMENT:

    The Director, Corporate Accounting is an experienced finance and accounting professional designated to lead the corporate accounting team. The position is responsible for the maintenance of timely and accurate financial records and information of the Company in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Public Utilities Commission/State of Hawaii regulatory/tax rules and requirements established by other regulatory entities as applicable. The position also is responsible for financial reporting and establishment of policies and procedures and a strong internal control environment over financial reporting.

    Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Supervises accounting staff in the completion of the following activities:
      • The integrity of data and accounting controls
      • Monthly general ledger closing and consolidation process
      • External financial reporting (monthly reporting package to parent company and quarterly for bank compliance)
      • Internal financial reporting (monthly for management reporting)
      • Research and appropriate application of GAAP and regulatory accounting principles on the financial statements and disclosure
      • Coordination with IT on the implementation of new systems and software to optimize the delivery of and access to financial information
      • Analytical reviews of accounting transactions, methods, procedures and policies; recommends opportunities to improve profitability and efficiency
    • Reviews monthly financial statements analytically to ensure integrity of the financial information reported
    • Establishes and monitors internal accounting controls, especially controls over financial reporting; track the status of gaps, testing and remediation actions as needed
    • Leads the execution of the department’s strategic priorities
    • Supports financial IRs and testimony for the Company’s rate cases
    • Monitors competitive dynamics of the Hawaii energy industry; keeps abreast of trends, processes and developments in the industry as well as regulatory requirements and laws
    • Partners with internal and external finance, treasury, auditing, tax and shared services resources as appropriate
    • Maintains updated accounting procedures and chart of accounts. Instructs and trains Company personnel, as appropriate, on proper use
    • Oversees, coaches and supervises direct reports

    OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
    • Complies with all applicable corporate company and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
    • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
    • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and/or Work Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, economics, finance or related field required.
    • Minimum seven (7) years of finance and accounting experience with progressive responsibilities.
    • Minimum three (3) years of management experience.
    • Significant experience working in a team environment with experienced professionals, with strong, professional communication and writing skills and top-notch analytical skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and Excel required.
    • Knowledge of US GAAP accounting principles and prior experience working in an internal control environment.
    • Understanding of internal auditing standards, risk assessment practices and change management.
    • Ability to meet deadlines associated with routine company financial reporting cycles (parent company), while operating in strict compliance with applicable company policies and codes of conduct.

    Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

    • Master’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance.
    • Public accounting experience.
    • Prefer utility industry experience.
    • Familiarity with labor relations including organizations with collective bargaining agreements.

    Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

    • CPA (can be in inactive status)
