Safety Director Job Description
The overall role of the Safety Director is to successfully manage Client's Safety and Health Program which includes the following main goals:
- Providing mechanical and physical safeguards to the maximum extent possible.
- Conducting a program of safety and health inspections to find and eliminate unsafe working conditions or practices, to control health hazards and to fully comply with OSHA and Cal/OSHA safety and health standards for every jobsite.
- Training all employees in good safety and health practices.
- Providing necessary personal protective equipment and instructions for proper use and care.
- Developing and enforcing safety and health rules, and requiring that employees cooperate with these rules as a condition of employment.
- Investigating, promptly and thoroughly, every accident - be it recordable, first aid or near miss - to find out what caused it, and correct the problem so it will not happen again.

In order to fulfill the role of Safety Director, that individual must have the support of and delegated authority from the company’s executive management team to carry out the job duties and responsibilities of the position.
Construction safety officer job duties and responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for Client's Safety Program; named in Program documents as responsible party; go-to person for Field and PMs
- Daily jobsite visits; attend and help FM conduct toolbox talks
- Initial jobsite visit at demo/mobilization stage
- Assist and/or fully prepare Job Hazard Analysis, Pretask Plans, MOPs with GF/FM/PM
- Training compliance: weekly tests, quarterly FM meetings; manage certifications for aerial lifts, fork lifts, powder actuated tools
- Accident and safety incident management and reporting: care of injured worker, report recordable incidents to Zurich; meet with crew, GC; prepare root cause analysis when required; meet with Cal/OSHA when required
- Manage safety program documentation and use and updates
- Develop and implement an incentive program to promote safety on all jobsites
- When needed, provide disciplinary procedures to correct unsafe actions and practices
- Manage PPE : hard hats, vests, glasses, googles, gloves; arc flash suits; harnesses and lanyards; ear protection; insulated tools, etc.
- LOTO/Arc fault and blast safety/NFPA 70E compliance - PPE, tools and procedures
- Crane picks - primary responsibility to obtain pick plan and certs with rigger and get sign off with GC/Owner
- Confined space work - planning, attendant, training of electricians
- Fall Protection and Scaffold evaluation and management
- Silica dust containment and compliance with Cal/OSHA standards
- Manage asbestos awareness training
- Keep OSHA 300 log updated quarterly
- Track recordable incidents for patterns, remediation measures needed
- Track first aid incidents for leading indicators
- Keep written record of safety monthly to share with BOD to constitute compliance with Safety Committee requirements of our program
- Manage accident case review
- Periodic meetings and site visits with Zurich Safety Specialist
- Manage online safety compliance data and submissions: ISNetworld, Constructsecure; DPR, etc.
- Office ergonomic management
- Ensure there is adequate number of qualified “First Aid Certified” people on each jobsite
- Secure and manage onsite safety person when required for specific project
Construction safety officer job skills and qualifications
- Excellent knowledge about construction safety techniques
- Good leadership and communication skills
- Be a team player and, efficiently assess the safety measures of the construction project
- Good written skills for preparing reports
- Must hold a state valid driver’s license
