This position will be a main point of contact providing support aimed at fostering student success through growth in academic, behavioral, and social emotional skill areas for students in pursuit of attaining a high school equivalency diploma. Because this work requires flexibility and investment, candidates with top counseling and instructional skills as well as a strong work ethic will find greatest success and opportunity. This position is located within the academic school at Granville Correctional Institution, Butner, NC (Granville County). Reporting to the School Principal, the School Counselor will serve as a core member of the education team in fulfilling and monitoring the school’s vision, mission, core values, and goals and should be competent at organizing and delivering counseling, support, transition, and associated education curricula to groups of student offenders of all ages in effective ways to create a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with the ability of each student offender housed in a medium/close custody male correctional facility as well as completing or performing any additional duties as assigned by the principal. The purpose of this position is to support and assist all offenders as they develop skills in the areas of educational planning, and career and vocational development. The intent of this position is to provide information, instruction, and skills that support the instructional program in core subject areas for offenders aged 18 to 22. Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Proactively designs and implements a data-driven counseling program providing activities, resources, and growth opportunities to meet the needs of student inmates in various custody levels. Provides individual and group counseling and classroom guidance for student offenders concerning personal, educational, or social challenges. Serves as a consultant for education staff in areas including, but not limited to, career education, transition support, classroom climate, learning preferences, etc. Assists in interpreting results from standardized tests, formative and summative assessment results, and other student data accurately and effectively. This is a full-time, permanent and continuing position (40 hours per week) with state benefits. This is a year-round position. Compensation for all certified educators working for NCDAC in school counselor positions is based on the NC Dept. of Public Instruction’s Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Note to Current State Employees: State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result. About the Department of Adult Correction (DAC) The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry. ABOUT Granville Correctional Institute Granville Correctional Institution is located in Butner, NC (Granville County) and houses close and medium custody male offenders, primarily between 18 and 25 years of age, in both single cells and dormitories. Offenders housed at GCI have access to a wide variety of programs, including educational and vocational programs, as well as a variety of job assignments; Granville Correctional is home to one of the prison system's four schools for younger offenders. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: Documented experience in aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized test results, formative and summative assessment results, and student data accurately and effectively. Documented experience of counseling techniques for individual and group counseling. Documented experience in providing resources and/or guidance supporting career planning, career information, and transition materials/ services to assist students in transitioning between settings as well as transitioning into society beyond educational settings. Documented experience in the use of technology-based productivity applications and software programs including, but not limited to, applications within the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) Documented experience in managing classroom behavior and maintaining an orderly classroom through the use of behavioral management techniques. Management Preferences: Certification in multiple core content/subject areas (such as math and science) Experience in maintaining accurate records including, but not limited to, social and emotional skills, summative and formative performance, assessment results, and anecdotal notes. Experience in working collaboratively with teachers and other staff to integrate guidance and counseling activities in the school curriculum. Experience in communicating effectively with all pertinent stakeholders, in both oral and written formats. Experience in utilizing a variety of instructional methods that align with best practices as well as with student needs. Experience in conducting non-standardized education assessments according to accepted professional practices. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." The successful applicant must possess a master’s degree or above in school counseling, with or eligible to receive a license at of one of the following levels: M, S, D. The successful applicant must possess a current (non-expired) State of North Carolina Professional Educator’s License (Class Code M, S, or D) with certification in the area of School Counselor or in a closely related field or be eligible to obtain an Emergency or Residency teaching license or Provisional licensure in the aforementioned certification area(s). Eligibility requirements for the Emergency and Residency Licenses are: Emergency One-Year License Eligibility: the candidate must (1) hold a bachelor's degree with 18 hours of coursework relevant to the requested licensure area (but has not completed a recognized educator preparation program) and (2) does not qualify for a Residency License Residency License Eligibility: the candidate must (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; (2) have completed 24 hours of coursework relevant to the requested area of licensure OR passed the content area examination relevant to the requested licensure area that has been approved by the State Board of Education; (3) be enrolled in a recognized Educator Preparation Program (EPP). Provisional License Eligibility: the candidate must (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; (2) hold a non-expired Continuing Professional License (CPL), and have completed at least three years of teaching experience (either in North Carolina or verified experience from another state) and (3) be working toward passing the content area examination approved by the State Board of Education relevant to the requested provisional licensure area. This position is governed under Chapter 115c, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Chapter 126 of the NC State Human Resources Act.
