Compensation Director is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the organization's compensation programs, including base pay, incentive pay, and performance management programs. Leads the compensation function and works with senior management to ensure that compensation strategy and programs support the organization's business objectives, meet all legal requirements, and deliver value and equitable pay. Being a Compensation Director develops compensation budget for assigned areas and manages budget after it is approved. Establishes data collection and analysis processes for market, pay equity, and other compensation studies. Additionally, Compensation Director may be responsible for entire organization or for one or more major segments of a larger organization. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Compensation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Compensation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, Workers' Compensation, Accommodations, Risk and Occupational Wellness Programs, the Workers' Compensation Coordinator is a member of the Office of Risk Services. The Workers' Compensation Coordinator is responsible for managing and coordinating assigned segments of the campus workers' compensation program. The Workers' Compensation Coordinator coordinates occupational claims and maintains first line responsibility for the management of each assigned case. Uses skills as an experienced professional with a full understanding of industry best practices; demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

    JOB DUTIES

    80% WORKERS' COMPENSATION CASE COORDINATION
    • Develops, implements, and administers risk management insured and self-insured programs and operations with respect to insurance claims administration, and loss prevention.
    • Manages workers' compensation claims reporting, work status reports, and transitional return to work program, for assigned workers' compensation cases.
    • Analyzes complex loss areas, and compiles initial workers' compensation claims data; identifies and collects missing information; inputs essential data within reporting deadlines; prepares and sends initial notification; conducts initial employee interviews; and establishes and maintains confidential claim files.
    • Assists with the administration of highly complex claims, and monitors payments in employee injury programs. Coordinates third party administrators and departments to resolve assigned workers' compensation cases and referrals to clinical resources, and provide work status updates.
    • Liaises with third parties and claimants to resolve assigned cases, in accordance with organization guidelines, in a timely manner.
    • Gathers, analyzes, prepares, and summarizes areas of potential loss; analyzes temporary work restrictions to identify temporary modified job duties; consults with workers' compensation medical treatment providers to ensure clarity regarding employee temporary work restrictions and obtains updates on employee's temporary work restrictions for assigned workers' compensation cases.
    • Assists with performing complex accounting and risk finance related to the monitoring of risk control strategies and programs. Assists with implementing risk control programs and strategies to prevent losses and reduce insurance premiums. Reviews updated work restrictions with supervisors and updates transitional return to work agreements. Facilitates and leads interactive discussions between supervisors and occupationally injured employees regarding potential job modifications and alternative tasks to comply with temporary work restrictions for assigned workers' compensation cases.

    15% WORKERS' COMPENSATION PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
    • Designs, develops, and presents training presentations to clients; develops and recommends procedures and guidelines to maximize the success of the campus workers' compensation program; identifies opportunities for improvement in injury prevention and injury management within campus units and communicates same to applicable supervisors; recommends and assists in the development and dissemination of training materials and forms regarding the Workers' Compensation process and the transitional return to work program.
    • Implements and monitors control strategies and programs involving claim payments; evaluates the need for ergonomic work-site evaluations and referrals to the campus WorkStrong occupational wellness program.

    5% SPECIAL PROJECTS
    • Other duties or projects as assigned by the Associate Director, Workers' Compensation, Accommodations, Risk and Occupational Wellness Programs.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • Thorough knowledge in the following areas: risk management; insurance; analysis; knowledge of common organization-specific computer application programs; knowledge of organizational processes and procedures; or thorough understanding of related industry area.
    • Proven interpersonal skills, customer service orientation, active listening skills, professionalism, and organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of workers' compensation claims management; Workers' Compensation experience with either a third party claims administrator, a Workers' Compensation insurer or a large employer.
    • Proven ability to use critical thinking and analytical skills to solve problems.
    • Ability to maintain highly confidential information in an appropriate manner; and maintain high ethical standards.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of occupational disability management; experience developing and coordinating occupational injury return to work assignments.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Completion of Insurance Educational Association course WCCA 10, Foundations of California Workers' Compensation Claims, or equivalent Workers' Compensation course.
    • Certified Professional in Disability Management (CPDM) professional designation
    • Computer skills characterized by: knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, or claims management information system.
    • Ability to communicate in the Spanish language
    • Strong skills required to develop course materials and deliver content effectively to diverse populations.
