Compensation Director jobs in California

Compensation Director is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the organization's compensation programs, including base pay, incentive pay, and performance management programs. Leads the compensation function and works with senior management to ensure that compensation strategy and programs support the organization's business objectives, meet all legal requirements, and deliver value and equitable pay. Being a Compensation Director develops compensation budget for assigned areas and manages budget after it is approved. Establishes data collection and analysis processes for market, pay equity, and other compensation studies. Additionally, Compensation Director may be responsible for entire organization or for one or more major segments of a larger organization. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Compensation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Compensation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     What you will be doing at Generate Capital as the Director, Compensation:

    • Develop and lead the company’s compensation strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives, talent retention, and market competitiveness
    • Design and implement compensation frameworks, including base salary, incentive plans, equity grants, and executive compensation packages. This includes developing carry plans, co-investment structures, and performance-based incentive programs that align with Generate’s investment strategies and promote long-term value creation
    • Partner with senior executives and the finance team to design carried interest structures that incentivize investment performance and align interests with our balanced scorecard
    • Collaborate with the People Team and Business Leaders on compensation-related matters, including salary recommendations, promotions, and equity grants
    • Review market benchmark surveys, analyze competitive market data, lead annual compensation planning, and recommend customized solutions aligned to the strategic needs of the business
    • Partner with the People Team to integrate compensation with the performance management system and develop guidelines and processes for linking performance metrics with variable pay programs
    • Oversee strategic initiatives across the Compensation team, including, M&A, audits, portfolio incentive plans, and other key initiatives that arise
    • Develop and deliver communication strategies to effectively communicate compensation programs, policies, and guidelines to employees

    Candidate qualifications & core characteristics:

    • A demonstrated passion for, or commitment to, our mission
    • 7 years in Compensation Management, including significant exposure to the private equity industry or other financial services sectors
    • Familiarity with carry plans, co-investment structures, equity compensation programs, performance-based initiatives, and pay-for-performance models
    • Demonstrated ability to deliver flexible, creative rewards strategies that link to operating objectives
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills with the ability to influence and collaborate with senior leaders
    • Unimpeachable integrity and glowing references
    • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including empathy, intuition, and listening as well as strong writing, editing, and basic design skills
    • High level of self-awareness and humility, with excitement about confronting uncomfortable situations or new challenges
    • Intellectual agility, curiosity, and creativity; problem-solving is your default mode
    • Entrepreneurial spirit: flexibility, comfort with risk, recognition that “perfect can be the enemy of the good”

    Generate’s compensation packages are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Salary decisions take into account a wide variety of factors including, but not limited to: skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, geographic location, and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is $180,000 - $225,000. In addition, the compensation package may include a discretionary bonus and other benefits, including health care benefits, retirement benefits, benefits permitting paid days off (including sick leave, parental leave, and paid time off or vacation benefits), and other benefits that must be reported for federal tax purposes. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of this range.
