  • Position Summary:

    Pukúu Cultural Community Services (Pukúu) is seeking a Youth Organizer for the Tutčint Youth Empowerment Program. Our goal is to create the next generation of social justice leaders by reclaiming our Indigenous Knowledges. As the Youth Organizer, you will coordinate grassroot civic/organizing work through base building, leadership development with 14- to 24-year-olds.

    Program Description

    The Youth Organizer for Pukúu Cultural Community Services will lead and manage the Tutcint Youth Leadership Program focusing on civic engagement and health initiative. Youth Organizer will use transformative leadership development skills using culturally rooted model and trauma informed approaches with youth to conduct base building activities. Promoting Indigenous Youth Leadership to Improve Health is geared towards supporting culturally competent youth leadership development and community organizing to improve health and wellness outcomes for Native American youth in northern Los Angeles County. The program aims to 1) improve organizational infrastructure to support transformative youth organizing as a core practice to advance health equity of Native people 2) increase capacity and skills of staff and youth leaders to practice transformative youth organizing to advance health and racial equity and promote community health 3) enhance capacity to share the impact of youth leadership development and transformative growth outcomes through storytelling techniques to advance health, wellness, and community equity and 4) strengthen digital infrastructure to support organizational leaders and youth engaged in the leadership development program.

    Primary Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    • Conduct regular base building activities that are culturally rooted model and trauma informed with 14- to 24-year-old Native youth including but not limited to: community outreach, community presentations, assess for basic needs and case management as needed.
    • Lead Native Youth transformative leadership development work through Native Youth meetings, skills building and reflection sessions, coordination or regular one-on-one check-ins, and political education.
    • Under the direction of the Tutcint Team, the Youth Organizer is responsible for implementing youth-based organizing program and goals.
    • Willingness to learn Tutcint’s framework model and translate it into activities leading to policy / systems change.
    • Learn and implement organizing strategies with the youth such as leadership development, civic engagement, coalition work, etc.
    • Works to execute contractual and budget obligations to run the program.
    • Recruit and retain youth participation and growth, including outreach, team building and other strategies.
    • Lead leadership development tracking methods, oversee youth numbers, and measure each member’s individual leadership development goals.
    • Support local and statewide education organizing and campaign work through action research, coordinating campaign events, delegations, and electoral organizing including systems change campaigns and movement building.
    • Participate in ally events and meetings to build and maintain Pukúu visibility and community solidarity.
    • Contribute organization-wide responsibilities for Pukúu.
    • Participate in all grassroots / fundraising campaigns and maintain a portfolio of individual and organization prospects for solicitation.
    • Participate in cross-department committees and teams.
    • Responsible for meeting facilitation and note taking for program.
    • Provide support and participant for organization-wide and regional campaigns and events.
    • Other responsibilities as required and assigned by Executive Team.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Required

    · Ability to exercise an excellent work ethic: time management, organization, punctuality, good judgment, and interpersonal skills.

    · Responsibility to demonstrate professionalism, excellent customer service and behavior that reflects the fabric of the community.

    · Minimum 2 years of previous related experience.

    · Precisely follows directions and uses good judgment when clear direction is unavailable.

    · Effectively communicates in the English language both verbally and in writing.

    · Willingness to learn new skills for the position.

    · Available and willing to travel as needed.

    · Available to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

    · Knowledge of and/or awareness of Native Americans, California Tribal Nations, and Indigenous Peoples.

    Education: AA degree or 3 years of relevant experience.

    Technology: Must have a strong skillset with Microsoft applications, especially Word and Excel.

    Desired Preferences

    · Experience working with a Native American organization, community group, or Tribe.

    · Two years of experience in a social service agency, foundation, or school district.

    Setting, Policies and Requirements

    Pukúu Cultural Community Services is a Native American serving non-profit corporation, which provides social services, youth services, health education, cultural programming, and outdoor environmental programming. The Youth Organizer will operate in multiple environment settings, including a professional office environment and indoor/outdoor event spaces.

    In the office setting, this position is classified as a sedentary environment with walking and standing regularly for routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. Exerting up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Walking and standing are required regularly in the office, programming, and outreach events. Regularly talking and hearing with staff and community. Low to moderate noise level in the work environment.

    The employee must be able to safely drive him/herself locally and generally in the greater Los Angeles area. The successful applicant will meet requirements of background/fingerprint clearance, U.S. work authorization, insurance driving requirements, possess vehicle for reliable transportation, acceptable DMV record to maintain auto insurance coverage, pass a drug test, maintain a drug free workplace, and abide by all applicable laws. All employees must comply with Pukúu’s workplace and contractual policies.

    Confidentiality

    This position develops, maintains, and is responsible for safeguarding electronic and hardcopy files containing sensitive client and proprietary information. The Executive Assistant must maintain confidentiality of all work product or files pertaining to Pukúu Cultural Community Services, and the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, tribal departments, citizens, and all other material that may identify individuals/organizations by name (either directly or by reference), as set forth by the Tribe and Pukúu, including adherence to a professional code of conduct and laws, such as HIPAA and case law. Any violation in this matter may result in immediate termination of employment.
