The Communications Manager connects residents with amazing materials, services and programs offered by the library. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Engagement Officer, and with an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Communications Manager will:
Oversee the Communications Department. Monitor expenditures and budgets. Write, organize and maintain the effectiveness of processes and procedures. Administer the library’s customer management system. Track relevant metrics and data. Prepare any necessary reports for Senior Leadership.
Manage departmental staff. Hire, train, schedule, enforce library policies, resolve difficulties, recommend changes to employment status, establish performance standards and evaluate employee performance of department staff and volunteers.
Manage marketing and public relation efforts to increase awareness and use of library services and programs and increase engagement with cardholders and the community at large. Identify key target audiences with special emphasis on diversity and inclusion.
Develop and execute an annual marketing plan. Keep staff and stakeholders informed about departmental initiatives and projects.
Prioritize and direct departmental work to ensure timely release of content development, design, and production. Write and edit content for print and electronic publications, annual reports and other collateral materials.
Act as media liaison. Maintain effective relationships with the media. Solicit media coverage and distribute news releases. Represent the library at public functions. Coordinate sponsorships and advertising.
Create and maintain brand standards, a system-wide merchandising program, and proper wayfinding and informational signage. Collaborate with staff across the organization to ensure cohesive internal and external communication.
Assist Education & Programming Department with library outreach efforts, including the creation of promotional materials and engagement activities.
Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in Communications, Marketing or related field.
3-5 years working in the Communications field with at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
Normal workweek is 40 hours.
Required to work special events as needed, including frequent early morning media interviews.
Starting/Hiring Range: $56,639.28 - $70,232.70, annually
Total Salary Range: $56,639.28 - $83,826.13, annually
Confident communication skills with excellent speaking and writing abilities.
Experience managing communications for an organization, including maintaining consistent messaging, preparing marketing materials, and interacting with the media.
Background supervising the work of graphic design, web design, data analysis, and social media.
Strong management skills and the ability to supervise, coach, mentor and empower staff.
High level of initiative and attention to detail.
Demonstration of character and integrity in all situations while upholding SJCPL’s ethical standards.
Public service orientation and commitment to excellent and genuine customer service.
Working knowledge of local government and/or non-profits.
