Communications Editor Supervisor supervises a staff of editors who write, prepare, and review content to be used in company publications. Helps develop, maintain, and implement editorial policies and standards and ensure conformance. Being a Communications Editor Supervisor oversees and reviews the team's work product. Monitors accuracy and ensures documents and materials follow organizational standards and branding. Additionally, Communications Editor Supervisor manages project tasks and timelines. Manages the coordination of production and distribution activities. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Communications Editor Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions.     Per Diem/Relocation: Case by Case basis

    Work Location: Remote options available, at TA3 when onsite
    Duration: 3-5 months on an as needed basis
    Organization/Group: CEA-TEC (2C040C)
    Project: Working on book projects with Historians and SMEs
    Clearance: Ability to obtain “Q” Clearance, active clearance preferred

    Job Requirements:

    • Book publishing experience
    • Publication Development experience
    • Writing experience
    • Strong grasp of the book publishing process, including working with authors and reviewers, reviewing copyrights and identifying possible copyright infringement, and working closely with a publisher
    • Mastery of the English language (must pass editing test)
    • Excellent editorial skills (copyediting, fact-checking, proofing, formatting with Word styles, etc.)
    • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style and using style guides
    • Demonstrated ability to create and manage publication schedules, enforce deadlines for team members, and track content through all stages of production
    • Demonstrated experience working with authors on manuscripts to fine-tune word choice, cadence, voice, and clarity of meaning
    • Ability to write descriptive copy for use on book jackets and in online postings, work with designers to create an interior layout of the book
    • Ability to write secondary components, including photo captions, forewords, indices, references, endnotes, footnotes, works cited, timelines, sidebars
    • Ability to determine, select or acquire elements (photos, maps, graphics, etc.) for the visual aspects of storylines
    • Excellent communication skills, especially via email
    • Meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail and organization
    • Ability to find answers through research and with the use of provided resource
    • Strong ability to prioritize and follow up on projects, work on projects independently and under tight deadlines
    • Ability to work as part of a larger team and get along with different personalities
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field required
    • Eight years of editorial and book publishing experience in a fast-paced, high-volume environment required

    Summary

    Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks an exceptional book editor to contract with our Technical Editing and Communications (CEA-TEC) group. The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge of the book publication process and an interest in World War II, Cold War, and LANL history.

    This is an as-needed position to work on specific book projects. In this role, you will work with a small team including authors, historians, archivists, designers, and customers to produce high-quality books for print. You will be a self-starter with demonstrated experience interacting with authors and other editors to make editorial choices, taking into consideration the author’s voice and audience as well as the organization’s style guide.
