    Departmental Overview

    University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alums, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. UDAR handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, and gift management.

    Fund Stewardship and Compliance Overview

    Fund Stewardship and Compliance within UDAR is responsible for accepting all gifts to Berkeley; writing and approving all gift agreements; administering all gift funds (approximately 10,000); working with the campus to understand and spend gift funds; and most importantly, managing campus-wide stewardship reporting for endowed funds that provides narrative and financial reports to thousands of donors each year. The UDAR Fund Stewardship team communicates the impact of endowment giving at Berkeley by creating stewardship reports that inform and inspire some of Berkeley's most generous donors.

    Position Overview

    The Stewardship Communications Manager is responsible for writing, editing, and designing narrative impact reports, with content from faculty, for donors who have endowed faculty chairs and professorships. The individual writes and edits a variety of comprehensive and complex material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis; researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures the accuracy of written pieces. The Stewardship Communications Manager designs, formats, and produces printed magazine-style booklets and supplementary materials. The individual develops online material or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives. The position is responsible for editing copy provided by faculty members and writing additional copy to develop consistent storytelling content aligned with donor communication and engagement strategies. The position seeks out information and analysis on research, education, and activities in faculty members' subject matter to fact-check and augment reports; conducts interviews; and secures relevant photos, videos, and graphics. The individual edits and modifies visual assets in Adobe Photoshop and formats content into existing Adobe InDesign templates to produce visually compelling reports consistent with the UDAR brand and editorial guidelines.

    Responsibilities
    WRITING/EDITING (45%): Writes and edits stewardship reports for external and internal audiences ensuring clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work. Assignments may include analytical, interpretive, reportorial/journalistic, or promotional/persuasive projects. DESIGN/FORMATTING (25%): Designs and formats reports using existing templates in Adobe InDesign and manipulates visual assets with Adobe Photoshop as needed to ensure consistent brank, look and feel, and visually appealing printed works. INTERVIEWING/RESEARCH (15%): Independently researches, interviews faculty (selected by supervisor), and writes complete narratives for faculty who do not provide content for reports. PROJECT MANAGEMENT (10%): Tracks production of numerous reports throughout the production cycle; accurately incorporates input; provides proactive updates to supervisor on the status of projects; prioritizes projects according to shifting deadlines and importance. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (5%): Participates in career and professional training and development. May represent the department on business affairs to the institution community and serve on committees.
    Required Qualifications
    Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation. Thorough skills and experience to write clear, lively, engaging, and compelling copy with complex messages in a variety of styles and tones appropriate to target audiences benefiting UC Berkeley's mission and goals. Thorough knowledge of and adherence to appropriate editorial style guidelines, including the Chicago Manual of Style and AP Style and publication guidelines, copy editing, and proofreading. Demonstrated experience with content development, research, and fact verification. Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, development, and/or a specialized academic discipline or field. Knowledge of principles of design and brand integrity. Knowledge of computer applications for publishing and image handling, such as Adobe Suite. Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening, negotiation, giving and receiving constructive feedback, effective collaboration skills, and political acumen. Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills. Thorough attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills. Knowledge of educational institutions such as UC Berkeley, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies. Knowledge of databases and best practices to maintain data integrity. Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and project management platforms. Skill to maintain confidentiality.

    Education/Training:
    Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required. Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related area and/or equivalent experience and training preferred.
    Salary & Benefits
    This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits. This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $80,000.00 - $95,000.00. This position is open to 100% remote work.
