Director, Communications Brand & Marketing

  • Primary Function: The Director of Communications supports oversees and implements a comprehensive program of communications, community engagement, and media relations. This role will be focused on developing a strong brand identity for the Savannah-Chatham Public School System that will reflect the vision and mission of the school system and that will market the unique aspects of our public educational system. Consequently, the candidate will need to be a strategic thinker capable of positioning our organization in the mind of our community and state as a critical component of economic and social development for our area.

    Reports To: Executive Director of Communications
    Salary Schedule: (A-4) Exempt
    Work Days: 250 Days

    Requirements:

    1. Education:
    • Bachelor's degree with specialization in Marketing, Communications, or Journalism from an accredited college or university

    Preferred:
    • Master's degree from an accredited institution in public relations or mass communications
    Experience, Skill, and Certification:

    Required:

    • Three years of experience in public relations, marketing, or communications with managerial or supervisory responsibility to include management experience at administrative levels in educational settings or similar industries of media, communications, marketing, or public relations
    • Ability to work with employees of the school district at all levels and the public at large
    • Ability to implement initiatives that enhance the District's image and identity, and that reinforce the brand of the school district
    • Proven leadership skills (managerial and administrative)
    • Proven ability to handle crisis situations and to communicate effectively during these situations
    • Proven interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide excellent customer service and to show teamwork skills even in stressful situations
    • Proven time management and organizational skills
    • Superior verbal and written communications skills including the ability to write speeches, reports, announcements, and press releases as well as the ability to introduce keynote speakers, make verbal presentations, hold training sessions, and lead group meetings
    • Ability to match verbal and written communication style to different audiences
    • Ability to manage event logistics and technical needs for community/event-oriented presentations
    • Must have the flexibility to attend frequent evening and weekend meetings and events


    Essential Duties:

    1. Supervises identified functions of the Communications Office to include the management of the departmental budget, resources and assigned Communications staff.
    2. Supports the development of the strategic vision of communications for internal and external priorities and executes the delivery of communication initiatives.
    3. Provides guidance and oversight for communication activities across the organization. This includes defining roles and responsibilities and developing processes for interactions with the media, use of social media, staff communications, and communications with the public.
    4. Ensures the proper release and availability of information to the public and media outlets by providing reports and background information relating to board/district activities. This includes communicating Board actions, Accountability Reports and Data, Academic (Student) events and other information that is intended to keep the public at large informed.
    5. Manages resources necessary to accomplish communication goals that support district and departmental initiatives, outreach programs, and special events.
    6. Serves as spokesperson to the media on school and district issues as directed by the Executive Director of Communications.
    7. Implements a comprehensive marketing plan to enhance public perception of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools.
    8. Ensures the dissemination of media releases on Board actions, news events in the school district, and statistical data.
    9. Acts, as directed, as liaison for the school district with civic and community organizations to foster productive and positive community relations.
    10. Maintains liaison with business, industry, and military community to ascertain informational needs related to school district.
    11. Maintains a file of community organizations and their officers, Realtors, health agencies, business and industrial organizations and their officers that have expressed interest in educational affairs.
    12. Serves on lay or staff committees as assigned.
    13. Serves as direct supervisor of assigned staff, to include selection, assignment, management, and evaluation.
    14. Coordinates activities of staff related to the production and delivery of communications related services, publications, and digital media including brochures, newsletters, annual reports, informational documents, web-based communication channels and video productions.
    15. Cooperates with the sponsors of district-wide, regional, statewide, or national competitions, events, and campaigns.
    16. Speaks at public meetings on issues of a general or specific nature as it relates to school and programs as directed by the Executive Director of Communications.
    17. Performs other duties as assigned in order to support the needs of the District.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Incumbents will be considered "at will." Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade as determined by Human Resources and allowable experience. The work calendar will be 250 days. (A-4) Exempt Revised 01-2024
