Job Summary
Serves as Examiner-in-Charge or Team Leader of examinations of loan portfolios in the Community, Wholesale, and Retail Bank to ascertain quality of the loan portfolio in a given line of business or portfolio sector. Plans and conducts large scale examinations and oversees the work of the assigned team members. Participates in the examinations by reviewing the work of the team including the most complex loans to ensure accuracy of findings and conclusions and compliance with loan policy and regulatory requirements, adhering to stringent quality control protocols. Assesses various policies and processes of varying lines of businesses to identify gaps or improvements to mitigate credit risk. Organizes effective communication of findings to credit review management, lending and credit staff, and bank management.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as Examiner-in-Charge of examinations of targeted loan portfolio segments. Identifies the scope and plans for resources; conducts and participates in the review; oversees the activities of assigned team members involved in the examination; finalizes and communicates the findings. Depending on project and scope, may also perform reviews.
- Serves as Team Leader. Conducts a systematic review of the team's work including the most complex assigned loans to measure underwriting adequacy, soundness of loan policy and processes, credit monitoring activities, documentation adequacy, collateral evaluation, risk rating accuracy, and problem loan administration. All reviews should measure compliance with loan policy and regulatory requirements. Trains, mentors, and develops credit review officers by providing ongoing feedback to help drive improvement and efficiency.
- Works directly with department management. Interacts, verbally or in writing, with lending and credit staff in conjunction with loan reviews. Challenges the appropriateness of credit administration and risk rating accuracy when necessary. Works to resolve any discrepancies and disputes.
- Conducts and/or provides oversight of continuous monitoring activities on assigned portfolios.
- Produces Reports of Examination documenting review findings for presentation to senior management and ultimately executive management. Reports of Examination include assessment of credit risk, risk mititgants, root causes of any issues, and identifies recommendations or issues requiring an action plan for remediation. Reports follow an established structure per department guidelines.
- Organizes and/or provides verbal presentation of review findings to appropriate audience primarily department management, division management, lending staff, and credit management.
- Maintains an excellent working knowledge of Synovus Bank's lending policies and procedures to measure policy compliance during reviews. Stays informed on new loan products, industry trends and regulatory changes.
- Assures that workpapers provide adequate support for conclusions and comply with established standards.
- Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.

Minimum Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Experience:
5 years CRO Senior credit review experience or 10 years credit analysis/underwriting experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Commercial lending, commercial credit, or credit review/examiner experience
- Understands how to identify, measure control and monitor risk in Community and Wholesale lending
- Experience in credit analysis and familiarity with complex commercial and retail loan documentation
- Proven ability to provide objective feedback in a constructive manner
- Ability to work independently and maintain objectivity in assessments
- Proficient in Excel, Word, lending and risk analyst applications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical, problem solving, deductive reasoning, and organizational skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Proficient in Synergy, Lender Workbench and Moody's analytics
